The of the Dance of Zalongo honors a tragic event from 1803, when women from the Souli region chose to leap off a cliff with their children rather than be captured by Ottoman forces. According to legend, they sang and danced as they fell—symbolizing resistance and sacrifice for freedom. Marvelous national to honour the women and children sacrifice during the Independence war. Parking available. The entrance is free and it is located on the left side of the monastery when facing the latter. You might find the metal door closed but it is not locked. See pictures for more details as well as the fantastic on your way there. Tip. Once up there pay a visit to a very old church (Taxiarhes Holy Church) hidden in the forest. Follow the signs on the left of the entrance to the monument. Around ten minutes walk. The Dance of Zalongo is a truly moving and powerful place to visit. The location is stunning, set high in the mountains with incredible over the sea and the surrounding landscape. The itself is impressive and carries so much history and emotion — honoring the courage and sacrifice of the women of Souli. It does take some effort to reach (many steps to climb), but it’s absolutely it for both the history and the breathtaking scenery. A must-see if you are in Preveza or the Epirus region. Exceptional and commemorating a terrible story. Unfortunately, there is no info anywhere there and the spot is unorganised so unless you're Greek, you'd have to Google to find out what this is. This is quite shameful in the municipality's regard. However, it's definitely visiting. Be prepared for a 20-30 min stair climb to the from the carpark (depending on how fit you are) and also there is no toilet around. So, nature it is! Don't get discouraged at the bottom as it looks horrible high. I made it and my 5yo too so anybody can. Great path and what a scenery. Peaceful also We saw this earlier in the morning. It's the best time as its very hot. It's quite a climb, with lots of steps. But a fantastic and experience. To think that the women and children danced over the edge. Very brave. Magnificent for a sad story 400 steps wear good shoes Well the walk up, not too strenuous at all. Great and even better story behind the monument. Very impressive. The hike up there and the are a major part of the experience 😊🏞😊 A place of stunning natural beauty and one cannot help feeling humble and overwhelmed. This is where in December 1803 the women of Soulion selflessly threw their children and themselves off the rock in order not to fall in the hands of the turkish Albanian army. Incredibly sad but well a visit. The are spectacular and the is incredible. We had the opposite experience to other reviews in that we found the in very good, clean condition and well maintained. No goat poo in sight. The is beautiful, but be prepared to climb about 365 steps to get to the top—I actually counted them! It’s definitely the effort, especially at sunset when there are no crowds. A perfect place to enjoy some peaceful, stunning scenery. Great views, totally the 20 minutes hike, best to go in the morning while it still shady on the way up. Beautiful place and the is spectacular. Stairs are a lot and high however you can take it slow. The story is so beautiful and the group who made this come to life are inspirational It was a hike! Better to go there in the evening if it is summer time… fantastic and the hike!
