Former quarry workings and sewerage works flooded to create lakes. paths lead around the reserve with substantial hides. Lots to see. Unfortunately it was one of these pay with your phone mularkeys, which did not work for us, so we put a donation in the container in the cafe. The carpark is not massive and it is obviously a popular place. Lots of hides, with information, around the walk. Sadly didn’t have time to the but used their loo and bought an ice lolly. £2.90 for a Magnum is a bit steep but it is what it is. Not many birds or to see on our visit, but it was throwing it down.. plenty of to shelter and watch to various ducks and the odd heron brave the weather.. themselves are clean and tidy, walkways are well kept and signposted for the looped walk.. wheelchair accessible, families with prams and young kids can all use this sight. A former quarry and sewage works, but you wouldn't believe it, fantastic place to sit and watch the wildlife... Just wish it wasn't raining on our visit.... It's free to get in, but donations can be given. The at Low Barns is a pretty simple circular loop that can be taken in either clockwise or anticlockwise directions. There are plenty of around the area, perfect for those looking to do some wildlife/bird spotting. It's never been overly busy when I have been here. There is a cafe/visitor centre here also, never been in however so I cannot comment on its quality and or benefits. What an absolute gem of a nature reserve on a beautiful winter's day. There are really from which to view birds on the lake, 1.3 mile round and path with a mobility scooter too. Free to visit, but a donation I'm sure is greatly appreciated. and helpful staff in the cafe, with food, reasonably priced. Will definitely again. No entry charge but donations recommend. Car park is open until 16:30 and there are lots of spaces. place for birdwatching but quite a small circle loop for the whole nature reserve. little oasis near to Witton le Wear. staff/volunteers & and visitor centre. Very walks with & benches dotted around the site. Such a beautiful place. A around the pond and meadows, very and great views and bird spotting from the various hides. Also a very nice and shop When you here you're also supporting the work of the trust, which is more needed than ever. Gem of a reserve, family friendly, nice cafe, toilets, quite a few hides, great for the kids with little legs, benches evenly spaced with fun facts on them. As a seasoned birder I saw some excellent birds too, very well recommended. An excellent site, which we actually prefer to the larger 'headquarters' site at Rainton Meadows for its more intimate atmosphere. birdwatching hides, and helpful staff.
