Wonderful gem and one of the highlights from our trip! We came for the free and and stayed about 35-40 minutes. The was excellent - we learned about the history of the family, different bee roles within the hive, beekeepers methods, how is extracted, and what about types - capped with 4 types (eg orange blossom and thyme), 2 mixed (think: hazelnut spread), and a tipple of alcohol for adults. As two adults we found the fascinating to learn more about the end to end process, but the young kids in our group (~ages 6-8) also seemed engaged. Tasting included being given three wooden sticks (like coffee stirrers), where use each end once to dip into the six jars. The small shop sold their products - personally we had to limit ourselves to buying just one jar at the end, but look forward to consuming it!they also had a few drinks and seats to enjoy as well. Parking is on a small layby across the street from the entrance with room for about five cars, and was easy to park (as the road isn’t too busy). Stepping into Apithano is a truly delightful experience. This small, cozy shop offers an impressive selection of products that are, quite simply, great! The drinks are a particular standout—absolutely delicious and a must-try. Beyond the fantastic products, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making every visit a pleasure. You'll also appreciate the clean toilets and the availability of some shaded seating where you can relax and enjoy your purchases. The only minor consideration is that parking is street-only, but it's a small trade-off for such a charming and high-quality establishment. Apithano is definitely worth a visit! Very interesting with clear explanations. Don't be afraid to ask questions: the friendly guide will answer them with a smile 😊. The was a surprise: so many different tastes of delicious honey! A quality product at a very good price! 👍🏻 Great visit of 20 min with a very good guide who explains the history and techniques behind extraction. I definitely recommend it - especially with the free after the tour. Family owned business, they do guided tours and walk you through the whole process from history until now of how you make and harvest honey. Then they have a store where we you can buy the family owned honey. Super great! Apithano Museum was one of the most delightful and enriching experiences of our trip to Crete. Nestled in the peaceful village of Melidoni, it’s a hidden gem that offers so much more than just a typical museum visit. The was absolutely excellent—informative, engaging, and delivered with such warmth and passion by the family who runs it. You can feel their deep respect for bees and love for what they do. The experience is incredibly kid-friendly. Children will love seeing the bee exhibits up close and learning how is made in a way that’s accessible and fun. It’s rare to find a place that’s both educational and enjoyable for all ages—and this one truly nails it. The highlight was the at the end—each variety had its own unique flavour, and the thyme was a standout. The shop is also beautiful, with a range of high-quality local products that make perfect gifts or treats to take home. If you’re looking for a meaningful activity that connects you with Cretan culture and nature, I highly recommend this. It’s sweet in every way—literally and metaphorically. The guide was out sick, but we had a good self-guided and at the end. Everyone was very nice and polite. Orange cat was a sweetheart. A really nice stop for your afternoon in Crete — the is 20-25min and our guide (Katarina?) was easy to hear and articulated everything clearly. She describes the basics of bee hives and bee communities, traditional/historical cultivation, and their more modern operation. The at the end was a fun and the is really good — great souvenirs.
