The owner show's us the place and we gave him a small amount for his kindness. The castle has had better times and it become to get damaged but this even makes it more interesting. You will get a great overview about Monchique. Passing through Monchique my partner and I were looking for a thrilling experience... Usually of old building are an excellent way of having creepy vibes and invent spooky stories so we were exited to discover these in Google maps. However, it caught our eye that these had "only" 3.6 stars. As an experienced "urbex explorer", it is not common! Therefore we checked the comments... and "dear lord thank you!" the come on with the package "nice crippled warden" and "funny looking guitare player insulting foreigners". To some, it might discourage, but not us! Actually we were delighted to live the "full package experience"... The warden was extremely sweet, showing us around, displaying "fun facts" knowledge in the middle of his scrap and chickens, a plate is there to collect funds but he's not pushy at all, in fact we did not have spare and it didnt cross his mind to ask for anything. On the other hand thats true that the place is not clean and somewhat vandalized but it reinforce the mystic aura, and the abbaye is huge! with a patio and two stores roofless chapel. To complete the experience, luckily going back to the village we crossed the notorious guitar player and had a short interaction with him! Complimenting him on his skills (which are truly good) he asked where we were from and saying from France he insulted us of all names! Among other things about our mothers that we are the worse of all, even worse than the German, etc... He smells bad and is really dirty but harmless. In short we had the full package and it was our best experience in Monchique. What a gem of a place, weirdly. A lovely chap welcomed us into the and let us have a good look round, bought some lively fresh eggs and Carried on with our hike Interesting place, as with the other reviews: you’ll probably meet a couple of old men who will show you around. Fantastic building complex, seems like a undiscovered treasure just awaiting restoration and glory.. on the very big downside there is permanently a guy on the long small road going there, yelling aggressively after you and wanting money 💰 another guy is waiting for you in the building, showing you around and hoping for a coin at exit. (Seems nice enough) and also living there whit chickens all around. This was honestly a slightly surreal experience. We came down from the mountains, and were approached by a middle-aged gentleman who offered to open the monastery for us and show us around. He did not speak any English, but another tourist was there who spoke Portuguese and was kindly able to interpret for us. He told us a little about the history of the monastery, but also claimed some rather shocking things happened to his family (cannot describe them here because they break the Google T&Cs), and the inside of the monastery is covered in black writing denouncing the police. There were also many chickens. I'm really not sure what was going on, but the man was very friendly and mainly seemed interested in talking. Some reviews describe another person who aggressively demands money, but we did not see them. It's a beautiful and unique place, but I'm not sure I'd want to be there alone. Would recommend visiting, but probably as part of a group. Beautiful views! There is a local man who lives there, who invites you in and shows you the of the chapel inside. He speaks Portugees and sells fruits and aroma’s. Very friendly! If you are in the mood for a walk, here starts some trails up the hills.
