The Lisa brook, which powered the water mills and other hydraulic machines, was a lifeline for the villagers, providing a continuous source of income. These machines, used for grinding cereals, pressing oils, cutting wood, and tailoring woolen blankets, are still functional and can be seen in action at La Vâltori. La Vâltori stands as a living testament to the rich heritage of processing. This manufacturing atelier, dating back to 1848, is a family-owned enterprise passed down through five generations. It is the oldest functional whirlpool in Brașov County and a unique gem in Romania. The atelier is not just a place of work but a portal to the past, where time seems to stand still and traditions are meticulously preserved. The owner, Mrs. Angelica Lungociu, is recognized as a “Living Human Treasure” by The Ministry of Culture in Romania, and she has been nominated for UNESCO same title and continues to uphold the legacy of her ancestors. The current workshop, built in 2000, still follows the traditional methods of tailoring thick woolen blankets, a process that has been perfected over centuries. We were treated to an immersive experience where we could witness the entire journey of wool, from freshly sheared fleece to the final product. The atelier showcases a blend of old and new machinery, including a remarkable 100-year-old machine that still operates flawlessly. The sight of the water wheel, turning the machinery with the same rhythm as it did a century ago, is a mesmerizing reminder of the ingenuity of past generations. Mrs. Angelica Lungociu enhances the experience, providing insights into the intricate processes of combing, carding, spinning, and weaving the wool. The labor-intensive procedures highlight the dedication and skill required to produce the soft, foamy blankets that are the hallmark of La Vâltori. These blankets, made from the thick-wooled Țurcană sheep, are not just functional items but pieces of art, reflecting the beauty and resilience of the local traditions. La Vâltori is more than just a processing farm; it is a living museum where the past is not forgotten but celebrated. The dedication of the Lungociu family ensures that these traditions will continue to thrive, offering future generations a window into the rich cultural tapestry of Făgăraș County. Amazing experience getting to see the entire process of weaving from raw material to finished product. I reccomend a visit here!
