It's just a ten minute downhill from the cathedral precincts, through an underpass and across a footbridge, to these historic cobbled quays. Came here on a busy bank holiday when the atmosphere was very lively and a band was playing in one of the outdoor cafes, and enjoyed a stroll here. The little craft housed in dimly lit cellars cut into the cliffs are worth a look, and there are also antique and a couple of pubs. The hand operated cable ferry is a novel way to cross the river, and they also do boat trips from here. There's also a visitor centre in the 17th century Custom House where you can learn a lot about the history of the port. A place to spend an hour or two. An underrated jewel in Exeter. The Quay combines history, nature and leisure. Plenty of cafés, and artisan shops. Historic Beautiful quay, with little shops, bars and to visit. Go to the spar on the corner and buy some cheap drinks - then chill by the riverside. The small independent are nice to look in and are not too expensive. There are in Britain that pretend to be charming and that actually are. Exeter Quayside, mercifully, is the latter. It’s a beautiful, meandering stretch of water and cobblestone, where the past hasn’t been redeveloped into a Costa and a Nando’s. Instead, it’s been allowed to settle gently into a place that smells faintly of riverweed, hops, and the distant memory of trade. Here, you’ll find what’s left of Exeter’s mercantile swagger—warehouses turned into art galleries, cafes with oat milk on tap, and a pleasingly cosy pub or two. Topsham Brewery’s taproom is especially worth your time. It has that curated roughness that says, “We brew things,” and, unusually, they actually do. The beer is rather good—bright, hoppy, unapologetic—and the garden seating offers a fine view of joggers, dogs, and toddlers in miniature wetsuits being shouted at by parents with paddleboards. Now, about the cyclists. Exeter Quayside east side has been rather given over to them by the council, who in their infinite and unfathomable wisdom, decided the best place for a high-speed time trial was a narrow path used by pensioners, toddlers, tourists, and anyone still mourning the death of walking. Still, there’s something properly delightful about the whole place. It doesn’t try too hard. The food’s better than you expect, the beer’s cold, and there are boats to nowhere, which is exactly where you want to go on a weekend in Devon. Give it a visit. Just bring shin pads. Still a nice place in Exeter with so much historic interest mixed with good to eat and drink. A well thought out Quay, have a variety of shops, bars, restaurants, and sporting activities for all ages, bike hire and walks. A very beautiful part of Exeter, after a bit of time in town to escape and feel free. Perfect on a nice sunny day. Good use of the embankment arches as unique little shops. The Quayside is a short from Exeter shopping centre and is a really nice place to have a 1/2 hour or so stroll. A lot more could be done to make it more of an attraction, hence 4 stars. I imagine it would be on a night with all the bars around. We visited Exeter to see if we could potentially move there, the town itself has good shoping areas but the traffic at the time of our somewhat marred our experience.
