It’s a small setup but something really unique Very interesting to see those old granaries... The granaries were constructed above ground to provide ventilation, drying and to keep rodents out They are almost always adorned with across above them to ward off evil spirits and discourage thieves Really amazing, traditional place which conveys the spirit of the old days. Apart from the attraction itself, the views are breathtaking, especially at sunset but it also looks beautiful in starlight. Quiet place, walking through the the quaint village streets was interesting. You could do the whole place in an hour so don't plan for it to be a whole day trip, good to stop if you are passing through. I loved this area. It's a lovely area for some serious hiking. These tomb like grain storage units are very interesting Located in picturesque Soajo. Being one of the ancient cities of Portugal, this little town and surrounding area does not disappoint. Come check these out and grab a bite at Maria's next door. There are many graneries in Portugal but the collection of community graneries i had not seen. Beautiful setting and well cared for. Parking lot very close. No designated entrance...Just walk up. The parking lot is also for hikers on 2 sections of the PR. Restaurants and small convenience stores available. Soajo is an amazing pace. Not only because of the ancient granaries, but because the farm animals still roam the streets, and the older women still wear black and carry heavy loads on their heads. Brilliant museum too. Definitely worth a visit. A unique and fascinating place with a strong sense of history. The 24 granite espigueiros (communal grain stores) stand together on a single rock. The stone “mushroom” supports were designed to keep out mice. Walking among them gives a real feeling of community life in the past. Beautiful views, authentic atmosphere. Very interesting nice stone granaries. Great for a quick stop in the area. We didn't spend more than 20 minutes here but it was well worth it! Go during the week as less busy. Nice drive up. Beautiful views.
