Fascinating place. The monks took vows of silence, were vegetarian, and lived alone in purpose built cells, one of which has been reconstructed. This was the highlight of the visit for me. Very evocative ruins and in a beautiful setting. I last visited in 2016 at the start of the English Heritage season. Set off from Leeds on a crisp but dry spring day and arrived at a snowy Mount Grace. This did not put me off visiting and found the place very interesting and wonderful to walk around. I must go back again but this time in the dryer mounts. A National Trust and English Heritage site. Both memberships have free access, but NT members need to pay for parking which I believe was £3 at the time. It's a beautiful and grounds. The story behind it is interesting and compelling. We were fortunate to be there on a glorious day. Part of the allure is walking around the beautiful, idyllic grounds. There are plenty of picnic tables dotted about. Beautiful place , love the history Fantastic staff Very enjoyable visit to this secluded priory. We were very lucky to have had a sunny day, and out of the wind it was a little sun trap in places. The was nice to look around, with plenty of historical information on boards to read. I particularly enjoyed looking at the recreation of the monk's cell. The ruins are very picturesque, and the gardens and ponds are well maintained. The daffodils were in full bloom when we visited, and were a treat to see. The served nice coffee, ice creams and scones/cakes. We enjoyed a nice drink and Ice cream in the orchard afterwards. Dogs were welcome everywhere apart from inside the house, and recreation of the monk's cell. National Trust and English Heritage run place, however, NT members have to pay £3.50 to use the car park. On a summer Sunday, it felt much quieter than Fountains Abbey, which meant peacefully spending about 3 hours exploring the site. No playground for the kids, but it doesn't matter, at the ruins can be scrambled up, and there are other trees and banks to run about on. The is quite simple with a few rooms to explore and an interesting bit about how a monk spends his day (mostly praying). The ruins are the best bit with a recreated monk's cell that really brings the old rocks to life. Gardens are small but well stocked with wildlife from frogs to ducks and swans. 80 mile round trip from Whitby but lots to see inside and out. Cloisters and Monk's Cell and Garden well preserved. Good info boards really help with the history of the Priory through the ages. Good pleasant, well worth a stroll around, beautifuly laid out! Good to combine with Ormesby Hall in Middlesbrough. It's a hidden gem. The grounds of the ruined Priory world be perfect for a picnic, and the gardens are beautiful. We didn't have time to look around the on the day. As National Trust members we only had to pay for parking, which I don't mind for such a lovely place. The only problem was lots of bins around the cafe, which attracted a lot of wasps. Fantastic English Heritage Gem easily accessible from the A19 in North Yorkshire. Surprised when we arrived to find that NT members had to pay for parking which is now £3.50. English Heritage members had free parking! Dogs are allowed on site but not in the house. The monastery behind the was really interesting and could spend 2-3 hours here and get a feeling what it was like when the monks were here. Beautiful tranquil place to visit.Spend some time looking around the and read about the history of the and the priory,it will help you to understand the ruins of the priory far better as you walk around. It is well worth a walk around the gardens and the ground. There is a small on site as well. Great spot. So peaceful and I adored there was a group of people singing so softly there. Great in warm weather. Just a hidden gem! Get in free if you are a national trust member. Nice little too and book shop. Fascinating history, in a stunning setting. The priory and gardens are very well presented, although the is a bit underwhelming inside if you're expecting a full on arts and crafts experience. Nice little and shop too. Beautiful gardens, priory was great. Signs dotted around to explain different areas. Staff who worked in the gift shop/front desk were lovely and the atmosphere was very relaxed.
