The is near the ancient mouth of the river Magra. This area was a natural landing ground used by the Etruscans and controlled by the Liguri. It was once a Roman military port and after the defeat and deportation of 47 thousand Liguri Apuani in approx. 180BC, it became home to a colony of two thousand Roman citizens. Many centuries ago when the ancient Greeks frequented the port it was dedicated to the goddess Selene. The Romans knew this goddess as Luna and they kept her as protector and patron of the city. The artefacts on display in the include statues, glasses and coins. There is also a section dedicated to sacred architecture and the sanctuary of the goddess Luna, the Grande Tempio, the Temple dedicated to Diana, an epigraph section and an area dedicated to private building works of the domus lunensi. In the archaeological section, visitors can see the mosaic area, the western Domus, the Decumano Massimo (an urban section of the Aurelia road), the portico of the forum, the theatre, and the Christian basilica. The Augustean amphitheatre and evocative mausoleum are through the Eastern Door. Lovely setting for the remains of a beautiful ancient city: Luni Came here as it was the site where Vikings came when looking for Rome. (See wiki) We didn’t enter the as I just wanted a view of the area. There’s not a great deal standing but the will suit anyone with Roman history interests. Could be a great place to learn about the past of this region. But there is zero to no information available, the was closed and generally everything is not well maintained. Still, you pay 4€ per person. Can’t recommend to come here. Very interesting site with fascinating mosaics. The staff are very friendly staff and dogs are allowed to enter. The amount of disinterest and laziness of the people running this place is truly remarkable. A site with enormous potential is just being left to decay, literally no effort is being made to provide even the tiniest amount of value to the visitor. Yet, even though my wife had already paid for the whole family, I got shouted at, that I would need to pay up. Guys! Organize your entrance so you can keep track of people! Use a broom! Cut the grass! Finish the alleged renovation of the museum! Then OPEN the museum! When done, start asking for money. Without shouting at your guests. Very interesting historical pleace. With a great amount of architecture and archeological excavation!!! Fascinating site, will be even better when the is finished Wonderfully quiet and wonderfully historic. The staff were friendly. If you are interested in history, add this to the sites you may want to see. Interesting area, not much is open today because of the very windy weather. Big was closed. Small but nice museum. You don't see anything exceptional but the people working there are very nice and ready to talk and explain Well priced, takes around 1.5hrs to go through the whole place. Unfortunately some of the outbuildings with things to see inside were closed. Otherwise a good activity.
