Cooneys yard is located in the Comeragh Mountains, between Crough Woods and the Mahon Falls. It’s only when you take the right hand turn to go to the falls, that you pass the gate with the sign outside, but if you continued straight on without turning to the falls, you may not realise that there is a cafe there. Parking is plentiful, and access from the car park to the cafe is a very short walk. Cooneys Yard is located on a working family farm, and the building and decor reflect this. There is a rural cottage feel to the place with tasteful decor, One touch is the large piece that hangs over the counter outlining the history of the Farm, and the generations of the family that have run it, reinforcing Cooney Yard as a real family affair, both as a farm, and a cafe. A family who are very porous of their offering, and are delighted to share there little piece of the Comeragh mountains with visitors. Although in a rural setting, located within old farm outbuildings, this place has been refurbished to a standard and is absolutely spotless, both inside as well as the outside seating area and car park. There is obviously great attention to detail, which as most will appreciate, on a working dairy farm small minor oversights could nearly be expected, but not here. The Service here is friendly, warm and welcoming. On our first visit, we were waiting a long time for our food (over 45 minutes) but on future visits there was no such waiting time, so it was obviously a one off, possibly due to something we werent aware of. The food here is of great quality. And especially the rashers! It would be nice (and more suited to the setting) if the toast was proper handcut bread, and not a sliced loaf, but that’s only a minor observation, and the toast that was served was perfectly acceptable Definitely a gem in the heart of the Comeraghs. Ideal place to visit if visiting the Crough Woods or Mahon Falls On the way down from the Mahon Falls in the Comeragh Mountains on a rainy January day we called in to Cooney's Yard Cafe. I had a deliciously warming bowl of soup with Irish Soda Bread. For our large group, Willie the owner, couldn't have done any more. Charming, witty & attentive, explaining the history, heritage and lifecycle in detail and answering the many questions. Food was excellent, piping hot soup and a slice of lamb on brown bread (which had a mild taste). A fabulous experience, highly recommended. Food arrived very quickly btw. We stopped by this café after visiting Mahon Falls and were pleasantly surprised. Although they were actually closed, the owner kindly let us use the bathroom and even sent us on our way with a delicious brownie and some tea—completely free of charge!
