It was under the Zrinskis until 1580. After the death of the last of the Frankopans and the failure of the Zrinski-Frankopan Conspiracy in 1671 this building was also looted and ruined. Built in the mid-1500s by the Frankopan family this served as a strategic fortress and noble residence along the Kupa River. The Frankopan family (also known as Frankapan or Frangepán in Hungarian) were one of the most powerful and noble Croatian aristocratic families from the 12th to the 17th century. It was part of a defensive line against Ottoman incursions. After a brief period under the Zrinski family, it returned to the Frankopans, remaining in their hands until 1671, when the family was executed for rebellion against the Habsburgs in the Zrinski-Frankopan conspiracy.Following their downfall, the was seized and looted, passing through several noble families including the Oršićs, who renovated it in 1803, and the Vranyczany family, who made it a center of Illyrian cultural revival in the 19th century.In the 20th century, the was nationalized by the Yugoslav state and repurposed serving at different times as a hotel, a fire brigade station, and an archive. However, during the Croatian War of Independence (1991–1995), it suffered vandalism and fire damage, including the destruction of important records(see photos). Today, it stands in a state of advanced disrepair, with collapsed interiors, though the park and chapel remain protected as cultural heritage. Unfortunately recent vandalism (fire) has damaged more of the structure. Enter at your own risk. The abandoned old in Severin na Kupi is an excellent place to stop on the way from Rijeka to Zagreb or vice versa. But to be able to do that, you need to drive on the old road, not the highway. Just a leisurely drive along the old road offers such magical places.
