Ένα φυσικό θαύμα... μια λεκάνη όπου το ποτάμι εκβάλλει στη θάλασσα... ο αέρας είναι πολύ ωραίος και καθαρός... • The National Park of Nestos Delta and lakes was founded in 2008 and is the largest national park of Greece. • It covers an area of 230 acres of gorges, lagoons & floodplain forests, home to tortoises, flamingos & pelicans. It is one of the most important wetlands in the country and in Europe, due to the extent and variety of its habitats. The protected areas of Nestos Delta, Lake Vistonida, Lake Ismarida wetlands and their surrounding area are now included in the List of Wetlands of International Importance The white pelicans arrive in winter, together with large flocks of greater flamingos. In the area live many rare species, such as short-eared owls, red-breasted mergansers, pomarine skuas, pygmy cormorants, bitterns, white-headed ducks, tufted ducks, ferruginous ducks, collared pratincoles, oystercatchers, stone-curlews, lapwings and bluethroats. Birdwatching is a must: pelecans, flamingos, ducks, e.t.c. Too bad the information centre was closed on a Sunday morning when all people come to visit! It was really nice, the mountains look beautiful, it is definitely worth a visit We have been at the place marked by google as "National Park of Nestos..." Rubbish as far u can see ... really shocking... It seems that the project was supported by the EU. Very beautiful area for daily visit. There is a Greek taverna with barbeque where you can stop for lunch then you can walk to the forest nearby the Nestos river. Bello, anche se c' è un po' troppa spazzatura in giro Long gorgeous walk along the river. We were lead by a pair of lovely dogs that apparently live there. It was such a great experience! Not a difficult walk to the railway. Super nice. Must stop and visit. Beautiful place lots of various birds, great views of Thassos.
