There is no public transport to get to there so you need a car or arrange the transport with a local taxi. WiFi signal in the area is not either. Brilliant spot for a short hike or trail run. By parking up at the nearby Bar das Grutas you can complete this 4 mile loop in around 2 hours taking in views of the surrounding countryside. The going can be steep and / or rocky but the trail is very well marked. Bring plenty of water if visiting during hot weather. Really nice hike! It’s a fun path and will take you to beautiful views. Absolutely worth it :) it gets busy at the parking on Saturdays but er managed just fine! Bring sunscreen and enough water! The first part of this is well mapped out and quite easy even though there is a bit of an incline. When you get to the top you can go to the right to the Northern view, it's a shorter walk. or you can go to the left to the southern view, which is approximately 1.5 km. Be careful as some of the road is extremely rocky and could be dangerous if you fall over. That being said it's a nice little and I do recommend. Generally well marked out route but some steep climbs in parts. We started at Penina and walked in an anticlockwise route. Initially the route follows the base of Rocha da Pena and it is a lovely little walk. Then you get to Pena and sharp left upwards and onwards. A lot of the paths are smooth but a lot are rocky too and sure footing is needed. Once on the top, there are some lovely open meadow-like areas, and some places to view north and south. A couple of short one way walks to viewing areas are worth it. Only short walks but worth the view. If you love butterflies, spot to visit. Two-tailed Paschas unmistakable. The sudden darting of a large black butterfly with a bright red trim to the wings is spectacular, Swallowtails, Clouded Yellows, Cleopatras, and Brimstones. Blue Spot Hairstreaks in abundance. Some Skippers that we had some difficulty identifying. We had a hike up to the top. The wall that you out to steeps in history. This place also comprehends an interesting built heritage, such as the stone-by-stone battlements in the top that probably date back from the Iron age, used as defensive walls, or the Algar dos Mouros cave, perched on top renowned historically as the preferred place of refuge for the Moors as they fled from the Christian forces during the conquest of Salir climbing crag for the late afternoons when low sun, only the odd climb is marked, had to use several sources combined for topos including local topos from the cafe by the parking - cost 1€ Had a lovely day in Rocha da Pena, we only went for a few hours to have a climb and ended up a lot longer than intended. There isn't much shade when your walking along the trail at this time of year and the start of the trail is steep with loose stones so not an easy if your not in hiking shoes. When we got to the base of the crag it was fairly easy to work out which part of the we were near and there's plenty of access routes for the various sectors. We had a bit of a scramble once we were off the path and heading to the Petra sector but once at the base we were delighted to find not only were the routes well bolted but also the majority of them had the name on the base so you knew what you were on. Would look to go again in the future but thoroughly recommend getting transport! We had been advised by a lady in the harbour near Vilamoura to use über to get there and back. The trip out was fine, however trying to get an über back was difficult. We even tried calling some of the Taxi firms for the Faro region and no one would come to us. Eventually a very nice über driver picked up our ticket and came to rescue us, this had been 2.5 hours after trying to get our taxi back. Luckily there is a little cafe/bar that you can sit and wait in, assuming you purchase food/drink.
