Eleousa Ioannina Island Holy Monastery

Ioannina, Greece Monastery

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. This is an extraordinary monastery. We had arrived a little early and had a broken-English chat with a cleaner and one of the nuns. She gave me a basil sprig and said it was winter basil. Hard to take back to Australia though. The chapel is exquisite. The frescos stunning. A tiny jewel on this lovely island. Amazing place to visit. Very unassuming until you get inside and see 30 years worth of frescoes painting in great condition on the church walls. Free to visit (and the lovely nun offered us sweets). Highly recommended if you are in Ioannina to make the effort and visit the island. Amazing monastery with historical wall paintings The landscape view is also very nice Keep an eye on the opening hours or ask at the island center about a good time to visit Oud klooster met beschadigde fresco’s. Werd streng bewaakt of het juwelen waren. ( je mag er geen foto’s maken). Wel mooi te zien in de context van het eiland Amazing monastery with stunning paintings! Impressive small monastery with a chapel that i can only describe as a tiny medieval Greek Orthodox Sistine chapel. Photos not allowed The food was alright, nothing special besides the roasted eggplant. Our experience might have been better if the waitress was kinder. The famous Byzantine monastery of St. Nicholas was founded by the noble Byzantine family of Filanthropini (Filanthropinon in genitive). The surrounding walls survive to our days, probably restored. One can admire the important frescoes of the main church, excellent examples of the post-byzantine art. A friendly monk might guide you while keeping an eye on you. A universal monument that anyone able should visit. Amazing ... Really beautiful and breath thinking wall pictures in the whole place. There was a free guide inside that tells you the history of the place in the meaning of every picture. Very beautiful and unusual frescoes from the 16th century, almost fully preserved! Unfortunately, no photography is permitted! Κατάνυξη!! Quiet and spiritual place. Beautiful in spring on good weather. Great views to the lake. Can be approach by boat from Ioáninna's airport for 4 euro return. Information about the island's monasteries upon request to Father Nektarios as of spring 2024.
