Small square where the monument Mehmed Ali , the Museum of Mehmet Ali and church Ekklisia. He was born in 1769 in the city of Kavala in the family of Albanians. According to his contemporaries, he only spoke Albanian fluently. His father died when Muhammad was young and he was raised in his uncle's family. As a young man, he was involved in the tobacco trade and took part in tax collection. When he was 30 years old, the Ottoman authorities announced a draft of troops to control the situation in Egypt after the French invasion there. Muhammad Ali was appointed commander of a detachment of 300 Albanians. In the spring of 1801, Muhammad Ali's division landed on Egyptian soil at the Gulf of Abukir. The three-year French occupation (1798 – 1801) disrupted political and economic relations in Egypt, and in the resulting power vacuum there was a struggle for supremacy between the Ottoman Turks, Mamluks and Albanian mercenaries, which lasted for several years. With skillful political moves, Muhammad Ali managed to gain wide support from the population and in 1805 he assumed the post of valya, also receiving the approval of Sultan Selim III. In August 1807, British troops occupied Alexandria as part of hostilities in the Anglo-Turkish War. After a brief siege, Muhammad Ali defeated them and forced them to evacuate. However, the Mamluks, who ruled Egypt for over 600 years, continued to pose a major threat. Muhammad Ali invited their leaders to a military parade in the citadel of Cairo on March 1, 1811 and massacred them, after which his power was consolidated and he began serious reforms. Muhammad Ali surrounded himself with European advisers (mostly French) and became familiar with European practices and customs. Convinced of the superiority of the European organization of the army over the Turkish, he decided to reorganize the army, the government and Egyptian life itself in a European spirit. His reforms in Egypt took place at about the same time as those of the reformer Sultan Mahmud II, but Muhammad Ali was more successful. He carried out extensive agrarian reform, confiscating fragmented farms distributed to tax collectors as well as lands given to religious communities. The administration of the country was reorganized: in 1826 a State Council and a government of ministers were established. 7 administrative provinces (mudirias) headed by governors were created. Muhammad Ali sent young Egyptians to study to become doctors, engineers, and civil servants at newly established schools in Paris and London. In addition, his sons Ibrahim and Said also receive a solid education, although he himself does not have one. Many secular schools were opened in Egypt. In 1828, the first newspaper was published. One of the most important undertakings of Muhammad Ali was the military reform carried out with the help of foreigners (mainly French). As a result, a regular army was created and conscription was introduced. In 1826, several military schools were opened. The new Egyptian army is armed with artillery. Egypt received an army of 150 thousand people and a fleet of 32 ships, the old fortresses were repaired and new ones were built. Military and agrarian reforms lead to the development of industry. Factories for sugar, saltpeter and gunpowder were built, iron was processed, weapons factories and textile factories were established, but because the local market was too small and the technical skills were not at the required level, Muhammad Ali was forced to export cotton. In his personal relations, especially with Europeans, Muhammad Ali gives the impression of a gentle man, to whom humanity is not alien. Simplicity and accessibility, disdain for the conventions of Eastern etiquette, with a lust for power and ambition are beautifully combined with him, which impresses the Europeans around him. This is one of the landmarks in Kavala. Must be seen as long as you are în this town. And also it is a good place to begin exploring the city. You can go to the port or to the fortress. And the Aquaduct kamares is not far from here. Great view! Toprağı bol olsun Kavala Mehmet Ali Paşa Meydanı Kavala is beautiful town with beautiful place and good people. You must go to the old town and spend some time in the little streets. A must to visit! Perfect view and nice monument. Great view from here to both Kavala's port and Tasos! Nice historical place Harika Manzara A Historic Square, information available on the Web, which is used during July and August as a venue for free concerts, i.e Sosial Waste, 22/7/2022. It’s worth to pass through it and has nice view of the rocks in the sea. As I stood before the echoes of our past, a surge of pride swelled within me, and the breathtaking panorama unfolded like a living tapestry—perfect for capturing timeless photographs. This extraordinary site, steeped in history, is an absolute must-visit for every curious soul. And before you depart Kavala or Thessaloniki, be sure to indulge in at least one (or, why not, more than one?) buttery Selanik gevrek and delicate Kavala cookie—their irresistible flavors linger long after the last bite.
