I got my first county top achieved Review of Mullaghmeen Forest Reviewed February 5, 2021 Luckily there was a break in the weather and we finally got a good day for a change. I wanted to start the County Top Challenge and I read that Westmeath's highest peak was in Mullaghmeen, through the Forest. It is 258 metres so its actually the lowest county top in Ireland. A good one to start with I think! The morning was lovely, and the through the was very relaxing. I brought the son and he loved it, a nice and gentle through the forest, with the sun shining through the trees, and the pathway very easy to navigate. We started out on the red route, which is the easiest and shortest of the three routes. It takes you through the in a loop back to the car park. The white loop is the longest, and goes right around the forest, and by all accounts is a long walk. The blue is the route you need if you want to do the county top, as it leads straight to the summit. I took this one after I was told by some locals that this is the one to take if you need to see the peak. I had started out on the red route so it was lucky I had met some people who put me right. I went up the peak myself, up a small gravel path that leads right to the top. Up there I got to see the surrounding hills and lakes (Lough Lene) of North Westmeath. On a lovely day with a clear blue sky it was a lovely scene in the fresh air, reinvigorating. I joined the gang back at the red route, they took a break waiting for me near the famine grave garden. Overall we spent about an hour and a bit and it was a very enjoyable time walking through the forest. And I got my first county top achieved. One down, 25 more to do! (some counties share peaks!) A full of beech trees and several walks. There's a yellow, blur, red and white trail with yellow being only 20 mins at 1.5km. However, if it is a longer you're after that's where the remaining three colored trails come in all of which are sign posted. There is one picnic bench we used to cook food. It would be nice to see a few more. It is definitely the nicest I have visited in a while teaming with lots of birds, plants and wildlife to keep an eye out for. Great though the the peak of Mullaghmeen is relatively straight forward to reach. Plenty of parking and not many people around when we arrived. We followed the blue route to the summit and back to the car the was very enjoyable Such an amazing place and we are blessed to live near it and frequent it as often as we can but total devastation after storm Eowyn. The was closed today Sunday 2nd February as the road into the is blocked with a fallen tree. I walked in as far as I could which wasn't far at all and it was so sad to see all the felled trees. Serious amount of work required for it to reopen as an amenity to all. I look forward to returning when we can 🙏 Nice walks. 3 different loops. We started it the wrong way around though and it's difficult to stay on one loop by going in reverse. We did mostly red loop in reverse and then went onto the blue going forward. We saw the cairn on the summit. Parts were dry enough - on gravel but some sections were quite wet under foot. Lovely in rural location. There are 4 different walks which are well signposted. Even the easiest yellow is fairly strenuous. The paths are well maintained. Well worth a visit It's a beautiful park! Lots of walks, something for everyone. Excellent easy to follow trails . Epic place to escape the mid day heat in summer . The tree canopy provides excellent cover . Have been here in mid winter too. for hours . Easy trails for kids on bikes . 10mins from Oldcastle . Good car parking . Coffee hut and ice cream at weekends. Watch the speed bumps on the way in. Looks like they took note, speed bumps are no more . There are a lot of cut trees there now! But if you go far, the is wonderful Good for dogs Love the although trees count have gone down due to the latest storm Plenty space for parking. Great for walk. Recommended Mullameen is the perfect place for athlete’s in training to the person out for a stroll, mountain biking, hiking and taking in nature. Watching the colours change through the seasons with the birds singing early in the morning is just what the doctor ordered. 👍👍 Decent bit of parking, few nice views , easy trail to follow bout 1 half - 2 hours to do.
