Fantastic little spot with interesting Swedish history A place with truly unique energy, when one can find one of the most obscure runestones on Sweden The three big stones and the stone circle are magical! But they destroyed the beautiful nature around it, so most of the magic is gone! And there is also a power pole above the circle, which i think is also very disrespectful to the holy place! Ironically there is a sign that says treat the place with respect, love and mindfulness. And the tree where the sign is on is marked to be cutted down. Is that a joke? It is sad to see how the magical holy place is being destroyed instead of making it a lovely place to visit. I think the people who did that didn’t read what the runes on the stones say! With its impressive height, strange shape, mysterious inscription and awesome antiquity, this is one of Sweden's most interesting sights. Very nice and tranquil. Really an easy stop off the motorway and great place to stretch your legs on a journey. Its a really calm and beautiful site and rare that you can enjoy such a special site of historic interest completely undisturbed. Won't take you 5 mins to see it if you are in a rush but worth the stop. A holy place from the viking age, visit it with the respect it deserves. The Björketorp Runestone (DR 360 U) is a remarkable ancient monument located in Blekinge, Sweden. Dating back to the 6th or 7th century AD, it is one of the world's tallest runestones, standing at approximately 4.2 meters (13.7 feet) high. Key Features and Significance: * Proto-Norse Inscription: The runestone features an inscription in Proto-Norse, an early form of the Old Norse language. * The Curse: The most notable aspect of the Björketorp Runestone is its powerful and foreboding curse. While interpretations vary slightly, a common translation of the inscription reads: "I, master of the runes(?) conceal here runes of power. Incessantly (plagued by) maleficence, (doomed to) insidious death (is) he who breaks this (monument). I prophesy destruction / prophecy of destruction." Local legends even recount a tale of a man who attempted to move the stone and met a tragic end, seemingly confirming the curse's power. * Part of a Larger Site: The runestone is situated within a grave field that includes other menhirs (standing stones), both solitary and forming stone circles. It forms a triangle with two other uninscribed standing stones. * Debated Purpose: The exact purpose of the Björketorp Runestone is still debated among scholars. Theories suggest it could be a grave marker (though archaeological excavations in 1914 found no burial remains, leading to the idea of a cenotaph or memorial), a shrine to Odin or for fertility, or even a border marker between the Swedes and the Danes. * Connection to Other Blekinge Runestones: The Björketorp Runestone is one of several important runestones found in the Blekinge region, including the Stentoften Runestone and the Istaby Runestone. While the Björketorp stone lacks names, unlike some of the others which can be linked to specific clans, it reflects a distinct runic tradition in Blekinge during the 7th century. The Björketorp Runestone stands as a powerful testament to early runic traditions and beliefs in Scandinavia, particularly its unique and potent curse.
