We hiked up the peak. It took us about 45-60min. We read it is useful to use hiking shoes but that would not necessarily have been needed. Normal comfortabel shoes would have been fine too. The view from up there is magnificent. It's definitely worth it to go the extra few meters up. You need to walk over the terrace on order to get to the way up. You can see the Rhine and its beautiful surrounding area. We could even see the Kölner Dom from there. On the way back we visited the castle which is also a must see. On the way to the top, there is one view point from which you can see the castle, that was also very nice to see. When in the area, the Drachenfels is definitely a recommendation from me. Unbelievable, If you are in the area you have to see it! Great views and a great hike or train ride. Wonderful place to be for an escape from a busy week. The view of the river from the hill top is magnificent along with centuries old history of the ruined castle. It‘s definitely worth a visit, the place is nice and spacious. We chose to go up with the tram mainly because of the children but i would recommend to take the trail hiking up instead. It was cold and windy sitting outside (for a snack/beer/coffee/ Curry Wurst, .etc) but then you get the beautiful Sunset view. A beautiful resort that is perfect for a weekend getaway within an hour drive and half day visiting Train up. Hike down if your legs are good. Rich history. Beautiful views. It’s a beautiful castle. But it’s small on the inside just 2 floors and a little tower on the side so ur done pretty quickly. And for the price €25 for a family ticket it’s pricey. A beautiful place with a nice overlooking view. There are two ways to reach the castle ruins: you can either hike up or take the oldest cogwheel railway in Europe. Both options offer a great experience.
