Interesting place. Too bad we didn't have too much time to explore it. Also was a very hot day. Will probably visit again some day. ▶️ Varbola Fortress was first mentioned in 1212. It was one of the largest ancient cities in Estonia and Northern Europe. The 576 m circular wall built on a natural limestone outcrop is between 2-5m high. The west gate has been excavated and reconstructed. 👉 Really worth a visit. Well organised and gives you a better understanding of ancient Estonia. Great tranquil place to visit with a long history. Rather educational. Very important place for ancient history of Estonia . Wandering around the place it's possible to imagine what's going on few hundreds years ago . Important is that place is very well run , tidy and maintain at the high standards for tourists visiting. Varbola was one of the largest fortresses during Ancient Estonian times. The hill has many convenient parking places. It has two bigger gates, you can walk on the hill wall, take a look at the fortress' well and a reconstructed catapult, as well as small sculptures out of wood representing the people and stories from that time. There are also benches and tables for sitting and having a small snack on the way. Varbola is a great place to visit though there is very little to do except walk around the walls and through the center of the stronghold. I wish more signs were up about the place though I appreciate we know so very little overall. Раньше мы сюда часто приезжали гулять. Было очень красиво и ухоженно. Теперь видно, что это место заброшено, к сожалению Such a great find. You can walk around the area that used to be a fort, there are plaques of information and also some comics that explain why some aspects of the fort were designed as they are. Relaxing place to visit, good walks ..., history A good place to stop and chill out. The fortress was well kept. The area was tidy and contained information boards about the location. It was interesting, reading about Estonia in the 13th century.
