With multiple entrances catering to different activities, Colin Glen is a popular destination for families and adventure enthusiasts alike Decided to come for a romantic as we were staying at the Le Mon Hotel at Newtonards and fancied a just before evening meal...lovely to see the Guffalo and the characters from the famous story ..Our children love these characters so well laid out and a nice peaceful place... Money has been invested into this area of the Colin Glen Forest and it is good. However I decided to go further on up past where the zip line area of the is located. I haven't explored the upper of Colin Glen in many years, probably 20 years, but it has been left to ruin. The pathways are not fit for purpose at all and you would need to have proper walking boots on to be safe. I got as far where a bridge once existed, it doesn't anymore so that's where I stopped as I couldn't risk crossing the river to further explore what's left of a once beautiful of that forest. It's sad that this of the Colin Glen has been left to ruin while the lower parts have had big investment. I don't understand why this is the case at all. It's shameful to be honest. Spent many summer days in that of the Colin Glen as a kid, it's sad it's not been respected like the lower part. Had a great evening just before Christmas at the zip wire and toboggan, wee hot chocolate just to finish off the craic on a cold night. This place has come on leaps and bounds, being transformed from a neglected woodland into a lovely walk, and an adventure now being of the experience, very interesting too learning about the different parts of the forest. ( you can search for little fossils in the river). We visited Colin Glen to do the Gruffalo Trail with our 2- and 3-year-olds and really enjoyed it. The forest is lovely and the trail is great fun, with figures of all the characters from the Gruffalo story along the way – the loved spotting them. Just a tip: make sure to at the Visitor Centre rather than the Forest car park, as the latter is quite far away and you’ll end up walking the trail back-to-front, which means tackling some big hills that aren’t ideal with young children. The signage could also be clearer, as it’s a bit confusing in places. The Visitor Centre has a café, though it’s a bit run down and could do with some updating. Overall, a very enjoyable visit and definitely worth doing with young kids. Gruffalo guided tour @ Colin Glen. Really enjoyable for my 3 year old, lots of nature and stories told. The guide Courtney was very good with the during the trial. We ended the session with a new book and official Gruffalo toy. Very much recommended this for enjoyment, price and getting the wee one tired 😀 Lovely walk, was really surprised how big the actually is. There is the main "fairy tale walk" , but past it there are several paths, along a small river. Some are small hiking trails. There are also several cycling trails, and loads of signs saying: caution! where cycling trails and walking paths cross. Also at the car there was a small cafe that was serving tea and coffee, and looked like they wer setting up BBQ too! A nice hilly in places. The path colour coded signage in places is a bit weathered. The green path loop could be better signposted with a post at the steps towards the Gruffalo trail. Cafe closed when I got back at around 3.45pm. We explore forest parks constantly, mainly throughout N.I. Thought we would try here today. Read reviews but always like to experience things for ourselves. I think we spent as much time dodging dog shit as we did trying to follow the poor layout. It is a colour coded route but after the first 2/3 signs they’re faded away. They’ve updated the signs for direction but the map doesn’t correspond. Very little to see in terms of an actual enjoyable walk. The sculptures of the animals are all damaged, dirty and run down. Have absolutely no idea how this place gets any traction at all. Total kip. Needs a massive overhaul and influx of cash to bring the place up to standards. Think every 50 yards there was a pile of shit on the ground. Which is a fair reflection of this place. Great wee to do with the kids. The enjoyed the and spotting characters. The staff giving the guided walks and story telling are wonderful. However, I feel some areas inside and out could do with updating. Overall we enjoyed it! Lovely walk, great fun for the following the gruffalo trail.
