As a fellow follower of the German TV series "Eisenbahn-Romantik", it was a pleasure and a childhood dream to finally get on the Rhodopes Narrow Gauge Railway. The 4 hours were definitely a sustainable investment - I just love these rides. Very slow but beautiful journey displaying mountainous across the Bulgarian countryside. To travel the entire journey end to end it is roughly 5 hours. I recommend buying tickets online as there is very little English spoken outside of the main city. Nice which brings u back into old GDR times. We started in Velingrad and travelled to Avramovo. You can buy the ticket in the Velingrad station. Return ticket is 1.60 Euro which is phenomenal. The trip is around 1hr to Avramovo and 1hr back. You can stay in the train. There are some stops in the nowhere of Bulgaria. You even can’t see the stop as there is just green everywhere :) There is not much to see, but you can lean out of the window (take care of close by rocks and bushes) and enjoy the ride. Very scenic ride to Dobrinishte. Yes it's bumpy, no AC but the are worth it. It's great to see such a service connecting local communities and offering visitors a unique experience. I'd love to try it in winter! One of the trains I took had a bar section (for drinks and snacks) as well as power outlets. I bought my tickets online Slowly moving and you can enkoy all and take pictures One of the last attraction left from the past. It is good to travel with the only thing that is not enough is that passengers needs more frequently trains to run from final destination. More often trains need to travel because people are needed this desperately. Especially in winter because of the winter season in Bansko. Old (marked 1967) but a breath taking view for 5 hours; amazing scenery of the country side, mountains, farms and small towns with huge variation in style and wealth. The tunnels and view of the tracks looping back and forth are remarkable too. Really interesting on so many levels and very chilled. Bring your own toilet paper and hand soap. Beware they turn up the heat very high for anyone accustomed to cooler climates. I'd also bring about 1 litre of water. If you're happy to deal with that then it's a wonderful journey. If you stay on till the end of the line the town is a nice ski resort with reasonable places to eat. It's more a commuter for locals and the service is very basic. It's a very beautiful and very authentic, perhaps raw rather than romantic. It's definitely an escape - feels like you go back to a different time, especially when mobile phone signal disappears. I'd recommend it. Simply a must for everyone who enjoys the beautiful Rodopi mountain! Simply sit back and enjoy the endless views! Една от най големите атракции в района! Движи се с нормална скорост и може да се възхитиш на гледката! a pleasant ride that takes you from the plains around Plovdiv to the highest railway station in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. it is slow and very bumpy but definitely enjoyable and the are superb on some parts. however, on Saturday it was very crowded so booking in advance is recommended. I wish they would add one or two more wagons on such days... Amazing with an authentic steam powered locomotive from 1949! 🚂 Note that the steam locomotive only runs on specific days (usually, around holidays). The everyday is pulled by a diesel powered locomotive from the 60s. Check the organiser’s Facebook page or website to see when the special events will be. Totally worth it. Both solo or group travel friendly. Go for it if in the area. ..takes ~5h, so have some snack(beer) with you The is old (not exactly retro, though), which can be considered a good or a bad thing. The seats were narrow and uncomfortable. The cards are with common seating. On Tuesdays there is no restaurant. It was very hot. The scenery was amazing, yet many trees obscured the view. We liked the experience. Traveling with the Narrow Gauge was a great journey. We started at Septemvri. Beware that the can be quite busy at the start. Most people get off at Velingrad, as this is a popular town for its spas. From Velingrad to Bansko, most of the carriages were empty (except for some local Bulgarians) and we had a nice ride through the mountains to Bansko, our destination. Overall, the were amazing and it was a really cool method of travel, as it is definitely not something you can enjoy everyday!
