It is part of one of the largest systems in Central Europe. Construction began in the 16th century in response to the threat of the Ottoman Empire. The complex consists of two main sections: the Old Fortress, completed in 1546 based on the designs of Italian military engineers, and the New Fortress, added in the 17th century to meet the requirements of modern military technology. Today, many parts of the are in need of renovation, with some areas in quite a dilapidated state. Visits are only possible with a guided tour, offered in Hungarian and Slovak.
