The Stadskasteel Zaltbommel, also known as the Maarten van Rossum Museum, is a beautifully restored city castle that combines the elegance of Dutch castle architecture with thoughtful museum curation. The rooms inside are well preserved, with period furniture, paintings, and exhibits that give vivid insights into the history of the region, maarten van Rossum’s legacy, and how the town grew over centuries. Walking through the museum is both educational and atmospheric: high wooden ceilings, old stone walls, decorative details in the plasterwork and woodcarving. The guides or signage (depending on what you prefer) explain the historic context clearly without overwhelming you. The gardens around the castle are also peaceful and charming, offering good photo spots and quiet corners. There are a few things that could elevate the experience further — such as more interactive displays for younger visitors, or a small café or rest area with views — but these are minor compared to what’s already very well done. It is well worth a visit if you are in Zaltbommel. Lots of history going back to 80 years war between the Dutch & Spanish. Very friendly staff, but there was not a great deal to see. We went to visit the castle on a Sunday. The outside is really beautiful and the interior is nice and cozy. Don’t expect several rooms our something really big as Kasteel De Haar. But the highlight of the visit was our hostess: Ms. Hanneke Reijerse. Super sympathetic and enthusiastic, she has a special way to tell the story of the place and the city. Even with my broken Dutch, I was able to understand more than 80% of it as the information was super interesting and she was really clear on the explanations. Hartelijk bedankt Ms. Reijerse and please keep your enthusiasm and the great way to protect this jewel :) Three mini museums placed into one gorgeous building. Nice place to go if you have a museum card. First section is about Maarten van Rossum, a dutch field marshall. The second about zaltbommel, the third about the famous dutch comic Jip en Janneke and their illustrator, who grew up in the town. How ever if you're unable to read dutch you'll have a difficult time. Very nice historical information hub around the city and the former owner of the Stadskasteel. It's included in the museumkaart and very well done. Not a huge place, you could have all done in 1 hour, but the information are well highlighted.
