It is a shame to have the filled with all that ironed concrete, electric wiring paths and left-behind boulders. Not to mention all the places where safety measures are lacking. The itself could not deny its history. It's placing (in a mountain range) clearly shows that it was a fortified monastery/church when it was founded and only later it got turned into a "real" castle. The place is a memoir for the Hont tribe and the Balassa families - also for a denied-and-twisted-out history time. I stopped here while on my way to Hungary. The outside seems to be very well intact. Unfortunately for me, when I visited, there was landscaping being down and concrete restoration being done on the inside walls. There is a lot of graffiti inside the towers, which is a bummer. Still a cool experience. Very interesting place, just a couple of minutes from main road. You can actually see the place from the road and that is how we have actually discovered it. I do recommend stopping by if you are near! Interesting place for easy trip without hiking. This place witnessed many of the most important regional conflicts, has been burned several times and reconstructed again. It started as a monastery, but because it's strategic location, it was reinforced with huge stone walls and moat around it. The itself is open at all times, there is no entrance fee, which is good and bad. You don't need to worry about missing the opening hours, on the other hand, not all visitors behave the way they should. Rooms are littered to an uncomfortable extent (at least for me) and there is graffiti on some of the walls as well. It is very sad that people cannot be thankful enough that they don't have to pay for visiting this place. Guided tour is and option if you reserve it in advance. Parking place is right next to the entrance, it is for 10 cars max so it is not very big. is under slowly progressing reconstruction so visitors have to be very careful. There are not proper rails installed on many of the staircases, balconies and corridors, some of the stairs look unstable and little dangerous. Some of the reviews say this place is "children friendly" but in my opinion it is not. In the courtyard there are high walls which are easy to climb up and the lack of rails in the towers make it really dangerous. It is not impossible to visit with children, they just have to be accompanied at all times. It is very picturesque place, though, and I recommend visiting it. On our way to a different destination, we stumbled on this gem. No information in any other language than Slovakian, and no staff, but free to enter and wonder around. Wikipedia helps with the background. It is a worksite/archeological site/ruin/castle so get ready to see a bit of all. Fascinating place. Easy to park outside and free to enter. Says not dog friendly but no one bothered taking dogs in on a lead.
