Fortress of Herzog Stjepan Vukčić Kosača

Ljubuški, North Macedonia Historical landmark

One of the Best Places To Visits in Ljubuški Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. It’s sad that the place is obviously damaged by people because there is no info-table about the site or anything for visitors to get more info. I really loved the old buildings and wild nature around the old disintegrated fortress. Very beautiful and definitely worth a visit along your way. Wonderful view! Castle ruins with amazing views over the surrounding area, Ljubuški, valley. Castle is now under restoration but it can be visited. Parking is next to the castle. I hope one day the whole fortress and the surrounding old town will be rebuilt and well kept. It's one of the most important historical landmarks in Herzegovina yet a bit neglected. Great view of the city and is completely free to enter. The hike up begins at the mosque called “Mahala Gožulj” but the trail isn’t marked on Google Maps. From the mosque it’s probably about 20-25 mins hike. From the bus station maybe around 45 minutes or so. Note that there’s a really sweet and friendly young cat inside the highest tower of the castle when we came! We gave it some food and water and it was as friendly as can be. If you’re an animal lover, please consider taking a can of food and some water up for her, in case she’ll still be there!! Easy road up, small parking area at the top, which was fine since we were the only ones there! They are in the process of rebuilding it. You can still walk around and look at all of the ruins. Do not follow Google maps! Follow the road signs and it’ll take you up a regular gravel road to a parking area. If you end up in a tiny town where you have to hike up, good luck! The fortress is an old ruine but renovated by the EU to match it's original look more. So it's a bit weird sometimes when there are ruins next to polished walls. But apart from that it still looks impressive and most of the time your all alone one the entire castle! Great view on Ljubuski and surroundings. Free entry. Work in progress, renovation. I had seen this place before and after its restorations, and I must say it is absolutely beautiful. They have managed to restore the fortress to its former glory without compromising its ancient architecture. Parts of the site are yet to be completely excavated with various buildings and ruins to explore. On top of the mountain is a breathtaking view—you can see for miles around you. You can see more coastal mountains to the west, and in the distance to the northeast, you can see the high mountains that surround Mostar. Between there and you and a little more East you can see Medjugore. This fortress has a rich and interesting history as well and is the best spot to see the sunset in Ljubuski!
