Located on the banks of the Neretva River, the Počitelj Citadel offers a fascinating journey through time, where the blend of medieval and Ottoman influences is reflected in every corner of its cobblestone streets and fortified structures. This historic site, renowned for its rich architecture and natural surroundings, invites you to explore an urban ensemble that has withstood centuries of political and social changes. If Bosnia had a bookmark for its medieval tales, Počitelj would be it. Perched above the Neretva like a watchful elder, this crumbling beauty whispers stories through its stone stairways and vine-draped walls. The climb is steep, the cobblestones uneven, but every step feels like a passage through time. The views from the top? Unreal. Terracotta rooftops, minarets, and the river curling below like a silver ribbon. Come at sunset if you can—the light turns the whole into a watercolor dream. Great experience walking and visiting Pocitelj Fortress. What I love about it is that it’s raw and untouched. You have to have good shoes though to go up bit it’s totally worth it. If you're looking for a peaceful, enchanting escape, Počitelj is definitely worth the visit. The picturesque of Počitelj is a hidden jewel. We climbed up to the ruined fort, where we took photos of the surrounding area: the forest, the Neretva River, the clock tower, and the old mosque of the village. We stayed near the fort for about 20 minutes, then came down to pray at the mosque. At the bottom of the village, there were vendors selling honey and pomegranate juice, as well as several restaurants and a bakery. This was SO cool! I loved this the most from our entire tour we did. There aren’t too many tourists and the locals are very kind. The whole area is full of beautiful pomegranate trees, which the locals take and make into amazing fresh juice. What a welcome treat on a 40º day. Take my money! The isn’t well kept, but it gives is a more realistic and traditional feel than the rest of the buildings we saw around Mostar etc having been rebuilt. I loved all the nooks and crannies to explore, and the gorgeous views from every level. I loved how the locals have built their homes into some of these places. What a lovely little artistic neighbourhood. I’d love to come back during the cooler weather! Absolutely love it! Well preserved ruins. The tower is amazing experience when you can go on to very top. Village is well preserved with unique houses. Allow 1 h to relaxly walk around. I was surprised that there is no ticking. Honestly I just stared at the cats playing for most of my time there. The is beautiful, painful to climb, both because it's a long way in the blistering heat, but also because of the old cobbled pathway design popular in the region. The mosque there still requires you to adhere to Islamic dress guidelines, so be aware ahead of time. Oh, and buy some pomegranate juice from one of the many vendors, it's real good.
