Probably one of the bigger and better preserved forts in the Netherlands. It was part of "De Hollandse Waterlinie"; defense works consisting of several forts in an area that could use a system in controlled flooding to halt enemy advances. I have seen a couple of forts now but I think it's safe to say that if you have seen one, you've seen 'em all. The fort consists of several small buildings and two main buildings. There's an exhibit in the first one as well as a nice restaurant. Entrance is free. Guided tours available. Free parking. No public transport. A visit will probably take you about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on whether you include the exhibit. Beautiful place with lots of history to tell. Very well managed by incredible welcoming staff there. The facilities (including the toilets) are clean and in very good condition. It was great experience - in the gray cloudy day to have a cup hot chocolate by the open fire! Thank you! Fortress built in the early 1800's by Napoleon and in use until WW2. Historically interesting, nice to wander around. Well maintained by volunteers. Part is wheelchair accessible with reserved close-by parking spots. Good place to take children (games in place) but because of a few drops parental guidance is advised. Not a lot to see here anymore except of course for the ford itselve. It ie pretty impressive to think that this was build by humans and it is quite big but the insidenis mostly blocked off. Its mainly a restaurant now which is great to be honest. Nice area and a nice walkign path next to the ford. Dont recommend going here with uninterested kids though. They'll have nothing to do except play live size chess maybe. The fort is largely destroyed, but what is left is well maintained. Nice for a short walk and look around. A small bar also serves good quality bar food and a decent selection of drinks and beers. A very interesting place to be: the best preserved fort of the Southern Water Defence Line. Not only for military history fans, but also for a cup of coffee or glass of cold beer or tasty wine, concerts, and celebrations. No ticket is needed. Entrance to the complex is free of charge. Beautiful area to walk around. I visited on Saturday and it was free. Just hope that they will do some maintenance of the fort. Amazing area for a walk! The picnic table restaurant is a nice stop to have drinks and food. Kids friendly.
