Scenically located castle ruins tucked away in beautiful greenery — a perfect spot for a quiet stroll and a bit of history. There are a few info boards on-site, entry is free, it's peaceful with no crowds, and there’s free parking just a short walk away. Toolse Fortress offers a pleasant and peaceful outing for those looking to explore a lesser-known historical site without the crowds. Visiting on a Sunday proved to be ideal, as the area was quiet and not at all busy. There is a small parking area available free of charge. From the parking lot, it’s approximately a 200-meter walk along a path to reach the fortress. The walk is easy and accessible, and along the way, visitors will find a few informational signs providing historical context about the site. Be aware of mosquitos. The fortress itself stands close to the shoreline, offering scenic views of the Baltic Sea. The natural surroundings are striking, with open fields. It’s a great spot for photography or simply enjoying the environment. One word of caution: we came across some venomous snakes, present in the tall grass around the area, so it’s wise to stay on the paths and remain alert, especially in warmer months. Overall, Toolse Fortress is a hidden gem that combines natural beauty with historical interest, making it well worth a visit for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. I visited this place 4 years ago. Again, I find the castle very nice and the views to the sea are beautiful. However it breaks my heart how a place like this with all its interesting history is left abandoned. There is absolutely no museology than a few descriptive plaques. Not to mention zero protection for the people walking around. Zero stars to the ministry of culture. Great and interesing sight, definitely worth a visit. We tried reaching it in November, unfortunately unsuccessfully as it was full of snow. Snow reached even my knees. Will try to go there in more friendly weather. An update from 2024-09-07 Very beautiful place, definitely worth visiting. Easy to access and there is no entrance fee. Very nice view to the see from the castle. I was there in January and decided to came back in October. Different season different feeling and look, but both are really nice. Easy to find and access. Beautiful ruins in amazing scenery. A bit hazardous with small and active children 😅 Well worth the drive if you are into castles. Most northern Roman empire outpost. It is a nice place to visit. I did like the informative sign side of it. It does look like some of it is about to fall apart. Parking quite limited in summer.
