They don’t have bikes to fit anyone under 160cm, but they won’t tell you that when you type your height into the app. Instead, they’ll try to rent you a that’s obviously too big for you and then act like it’s not their problem. The “swapper” refused to give me the I wanted, even though it was in stock, but handed it to my friend who came right after me. We couldn’t even swap between each other, leaving me stuck with a colour I couldn’t hate more. She also tried to make me sign a six-month subscription instead of the flexible one I asked for. It felt like her only goal was wasting my rather than doing her job. Don’t sign anything right away, wait for someone who actually wants to help. I hope you actually hire someone who helps people instead of enjoying seeing them struggling. You were so rude I felt embarrassed for you Swapfiets, the company that proves travel exists, because apparently their clocks run 10 minutes faster than everyone else’s. I had a confirmed reservation in the app, showed up at the exact (with a solid 10 minutes left before closing), and was greeted with… a shrug. Apparently, handing over the I had booked would have been “too much effort” at that late hour. Imagine the exhaustion of walking the two meters to a rack! So instead of leaving with a bike, I left with a story: how Swapfiets invented the new model called “Sorry, not sorry”. If you want a bike, better bring not just ID and confirmation, but also a machine and maybe a motivational speech for the staff. Thanks Swapfiets, I came for wheels but left with sarcasm. Five stars for irony, zero for service. …BTW Here’s a simple calculation that shows why it’s cheaper to buy a for €150 than to rent one from Swapfiets. Realistic assumptions • Buying: €150 for the + ~€30/year basic maintenance (tire, brake, chain) + (optional) €20 for a lock. • Swapfiets rental: between €20–30/month (depending on plan/model). Break-even point Break-even (months) = €150 / monthly subscription • at €20/month → 7.5 months • at €25/month → 6 months • at €30/month → 5 months After these points, buying becomes cheaper. Total cost comparison Over 12 months • Buying: €150 + €30 (maintenance) + €20 (lock, optional) ≈ €180–200 • Renting: • €20/month → €240 • €25/month → €300 • €30/month → €360 Over 24 months • Buying: €150 + €60 (maintenance for 2 years) + €20 lock ≈ €210–230 • Renting: • €20/month → €480 • €25/month → €600 • €30/month → €720 Bottom line • If you’re in Groningen for more than 5–7 months, buying (€150) is almost certainly cheaper than renting. • Even if you add extra costs (say €50–100 unexpected repairs), over 12–24 buying still wins easily. I returned my Swapfiets in early July after a store employee told me I would only have to pay a small fee (around 4 or 5 euros). Based on that, I canceled my subscription. Later, I was charged the full month. Customer refused any compensation, even though the mistake clearly came from their own staff. They just said “policy is policy.” I paid in the end to avoid extra costs, but I’m really disappointed with how it was handled. Also, Swapfiets is very expensive for what it offers. The isn’t flexible, and it’s not cheap. You’re much better off buying a second-hand on Marktplaats, or waiting for an opportunity through the university or local contacts. Make sure to get everything in writing if you decide to use Swapfiets. Edit: I appreciate the reply from Swapfiets here, but I want to clarify that I’ve already contacted their customer multiple times before posting this review. Unfortunately, they consistently refused to take responsibility or offer any meaningful solution, instead placing the blame on me despite their staff’s incorrect information. It’s disappointing to see them still deflecting instead of acknowledging the issue. very nice staff!
