Cozy small city theatre with A Aalto architecture. Mostly Finnish program but try to get tickets to symphony orchestra concerts on Wednesdays. They are almost always sold out. Good orchestra and performances. Awesome site , with great seat settings. Unfortunately, due perhaps to budget reasons, they have a tendency to focus on mainstream popular dramas, comedies, or musicals. The last time I went, the significantly older crowd was also somewhat snobbish and elitist towards us younger, casually dressed, folks during the half-time break. This is of course not the theatre's fault, but rather the view of the art of theatre as a whole in this country. I respect the art of theatre, and as JKL's only "official" theatre, I understand why things are the way they are. I hope that one day, theatre in this city can be revived to attract a younger crowd, and stray from the mainstream into more experimental territory. Firstly: I went to a matinee gig by a quartet called Meta4 yesterday (at noon on the 3 October). They played Haydn's Symphony No 100 aka Military Symphony with an orchestra and Crumb's "Dark Angels". They also played Shostakovich, but that was in the evening concert. I liked both pieces, No 100 for its briskness because the orchestra was on point and Dark Angels' various sound producing methods were intriguing e.g. playing a gong with a bow for a cello. Secondly: for a city of this size, Jyväskylä offers a wide variety of culture happenings and things of that nature where the city theater and orchestra are not exceptions. On the stage there has been dancing, musicals (Hair is on now, haha - a pun of sorts), plays of course, monologues, performance artists, concert series, gigs, admission-free stuff and shows for children. The only problem with plays might be that the performance language is usually Finnish. I don't go to theater that often because I don't know how to get cheap tickets and haven't had time to check how to get them but I keep tabs on their events. So, what can I tell you? Check the concert and gig listings. I'm guite sure there is a lot to see and hear at the city theater, for a town of this size. Every time, pure awesomeness. Alvar Aalto design. Nice place. Great theater. Friendly staff, good seats, and a selection of movies that covers all age groups. Here you can feel the love of humanity, of being a human and belonging togerher. The plays are deep, fun and suprising. Athmosphere is cultural, classic and bohemian at the same time. A little minus comes because there's not luxury in the building, only Scandinavian purity. Evening caffeteria there is great, there's delicious and creative snacks!
