There were several tragedies here, the loss of the Royal Oak at the beginning of Ww 2 due to bravery & cunning of uboat commander was a horrific loss of life, 835 including 134 boy sailors. The ship is a war grave. HMS Vanguard blew up in 1917 killing 843. At the end of ww1 the imperial German navy successfully scuttled itself here. Amazingly almost all the ships were salvaged. It’s a for navy buffs. Not an easy to access as it is located on the remote and charming island of Hoy but also a fantastic one ! A staff, a nice café and an awesome exhibition of the of the Scapa Flow naval base, major battles at sea nearby with an incredible collection of items, either from nearby sunk ships, models, maps and such. The is free to access but definitely deserves a tip for them as the work put in it is incredible. What a brilliant museum. Incredibly well laid out with just the right amount of and very welcoming and helpful staff. The fare as for passengers from Houton was also a bargain. The was also very well priced but sadly let down by extremely unenthusiastic and poor housekeeping. What a fabulous place. Entry is free, but a donation is suggested. Well worth the visit. Give yourself an hour, at least. There is a wealth of about the areas past, and the details of the war and naval statistics are amazing. The entry reception and are brand new, with the balance of the display utilising the existing old buildings and pumps etc. It's a must-see as soon as you get off the ferry. A lot of the site is derelict, but there are some free maps that explain what you can find. We were there from 11 until 4, which seemed the right time. Would love to come again! We have visited this amazing twice now,and each time we see more & more. This was an excellent addition to our visit to the Orkney Islands. To get here you can take the foot passenger from stromness but you'd have to walk there as there is no bus or you can take the car over if you go via houghton (best if you want to explore the island!) It's amazing to see all the photos of the people who were involved on Hoy, amd learn just how much Orkney did in the war efforts. Well worth a visit. Also, ask them to open up the shed, there is more to see in there but they'll only open it up if you ask! Also, go into the air raid shelter, it's a little spooky, but its really good.
