This must have been a very palatial palace given its location. Quite a substantial ruin all the same well worth a visit if you're in the area. This old palace is only ruins, but there is good signage to explain the interesting history. There's a pretty little church and graveyard across the road. Free entry. Very impressive ancient building well worth a visit. Parking nearby. Immaculately preserved building and grounds are a pleasure to walk around. Helpful information signs on site. Sorta preserved remains of a castle. Little restoration. Overall footprint of prior castle is well defined as are some walls. A worthwhile stop while touring the Orkney coast. Fascinating ruin, well preserved given the elements. Make sure you visit the nearby shop - great selection of pies.... Loads to see and photograph. The footing may be uneven in places but o.k. if you are careful. I was as I had two walking sticks with me. Fascinating place. Really interesting ruins with brilliantly sign posted areas and info. Not much parking around, so you need to find somewhere on the road in the village to park and thrn walk to it. Noticeboards around to give you information and show pictures of how it would have looked when it was standing as a completed fortified Palace. Wall notices to show you what each room would have been. Impressive sized rooms, high walls and big windows. I bet it would've looked beautiful before it was left to ruin. The admission is free. Basic facilities on-site; no large visitor centre. Nearest toilets are in Birsay village or community centre nearby. Windbreakers and wellies recommended if the Orkney weather isn’t playing nice.😊 Interesting, doesn't take long. Fantastic cafe down the road- a must. BIRSAY Bay tea room. Also broch of Birsay 5mins away - includes a small - IF the tide is out. Good couple of hours doing all three. Pretty much anywhere else in the world and this would be a really cool ruin worth a decent chunk of your time. But on Orkney, there is so much to see and do that this should only act as a ten minute detour. Nice information boards telling an interesting story, and parking only a short walk away (although it was very busy when we visited). No tickets are necessary, just stop by and visit the palace. Although it is in ruins, it's a great experience to see for yourself. Beautiful little island with stunning views all around, we were very privileged to see quite a few puffins on a perfect day. Very high cliffs with no fencing so kids need to be kept a very close eye on. Possibly my favourite day on Orkney, although any day on Orkney is special. At the gateway to the Brough of Birsay, the Earl's Palace is a definite item on your 'Places to See' list. Doesnt take long to walk through, and there's lots of information available for self-touring, and to bring you up to speed on this fascinating historical spot. Well worth a wander through, with parking, a loo, and a great little grocery store nearby. Check out the Birsay Tea Shop, and the jewel of a rock and fossil shop. Easy to access. Don’t need much time there but worth seeing if exploring Orkney.
