Absolutely love this place. The ruins of Penicuik House. Was actually amazed when we could actually get in to the ruins and have a look around. Place is epic from the inside. Definitely well worth a visit. It's free entry to get in to the ruins Had a lovely about this gem today. Still amazes me how many lovely places there are just outside Edinburgh. Didn't know this place existed. Good old Google maps! It's free to about but it's a working farm so if you are walking your dog be respectful of that. Lovely place for walks. Car park is a short but the roads are good so wheelchair access is good. A must visit. Best in and around Penicuik Really nice renovated grand facade. Very commanding exterior amidst the snow Beautiful House. Learning a little if its history and surrounding paper mills. Reminded me of Pride and Predjudice. Great for most abilities. Lovely autumn round the estate with great views. Calm and quiet place. Farmlands. Good for a with kids, pets, couples, friends. Beautiful scenery and well-maintained paths. The only downside is the people that pick up their dog poo 💩, then just throw away the bag? Why pick it up in the first place? 🤔 Penicuik house is a fantastic place to visit along with gardens and surrounding paths and a lake to see at the bottom of the hill. A gorgeous place to go for walks and see the history and wildlife An absolute gem of a place! I didn’t know it existed until someone mentioned it on social media. A lovely place to wander around and the cafe is friendly and inviting. The grounds are dog friendly (so long as they behave as there is livestock). Parking may be a bit of an issue on busy days. Huge area of park, woodland and pasture with superb public access (much suitable for wheelchairs and buggies). Great for dogs, though need to be vigilant for livestock at all times. Ongoing conservation work, planting lots of mixed woodland (steadily replacing softwood plantations). Lots of wild flowers including orchids. Dippers and kingfishers on the river. Its a beautiful place - its not a long to the tower, and a little longer to the main house - but you can for hours all the way into the countryside. Its very easy paths from the car park to the house (so easy for buggies or a wheelchair), then there is a marked walking path if you're going further which might not be so easy for buggies etc. Great for solo, couples, family & friends, kids and dogs There is a free car park - but is not the biggest and can get busy at times. Its a 2 min drive from Penicuik We spent 4 glorious days at the large cottage on the estate. The facilities are second-to-none, with every detail carefully thought out. Wonderfully comfortable; lots of little extras e.g. tea, coffee, edibles, beautiful surroundings, high standard of furnishings & kitchen equipment; outdoor tub (my family indulged in "snow-rolling" & then swiftly entered the tub!), outdoor barbecue; log burner in sitting room; I could go on, but do try this place.... luxury with beautiful surroundings. Lots to see & learn about the history of the Estate.
