The Black Swan

Helston, United Kingdom Pub

One of the Best Places To Visits in Gweek Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. No idea why this has good reviews. Whole pub smelt very damp, assume due to the large amount of washing they are doing for days on end to the outside , shame they are not doing inside as it needs it ! No one in there when we visited and can see why , service was not great and no beers available on tap , had a quick drink and left. Didn’t feel like giving it a second try on our week long holiday in the village ! 4 of us were a bit peckish, and popped in on the off-chance. Never been to this pub in its current form, went several times as the Gweek Inn Total honesty, the interior looks rather tired, and my hopes were not too high. We had a lovely welcome by a lovely lass called Rhianna who has just the sweetest face! She took our order quite quickly, and was patient with my dad who has dementia who can be a bit unpredictable sometimes. We were all disappointed to hear that fish and chips were off the menu, as there wasn't much else we really fancied, but we decided on meatballs and cajun chicken and bubble and squeak for the parents. Again, being honest it was a long wait for the food, we weren't in a rush, so it didn't really matter. Tell you what, it was so worth the wait! Wow!! Meatballs were lightly spiced and wasn't too hot at all! Lovely! My husband is an avid cook and he said he had never tasted better Cajun Chicken. Mum and dad were WW2 war babies and to them, bubble and squeak was always a bit of a "use up leftovers" kind of meal. They were both blown away by the food, the dressing and the taste! Having gobbled that lot up, we were informed there was only one pudding.... a cheesecake. Hell, cheesecake it was then!! Again. Oh my god, the best cheesecake ever!!! Rhianna, you're a wonderful front of house! Charlotte, we are impressed! We asked about the chef, and Rhianna told us you were new to the pub. I've told them to hang onto you! You're phenomenal! Friendly fellow customers were an added bonus! Well done, girls! Gweek is a lovely village with lots of wonderful walks. The pub is situated in a great place with plenty of parking at the back. The staff were attentive, and the place was clean and welcoming. However, for myself I didn't really enjoy the food. Which was available for lunch. I chose a small plate at £7. It was very basic with humours, with chickpeas on top on a sourdough slice. The bread was stale and so tough I was struggling to eat it. It was very bland and lacked any flavour. The chilli dressing was lacking. Though it did look apertising on the plate. It is not something I would recommend. I would go back for a drink, but I would probably just have a bowl of chips next time. A true local pub with a good atmosphere. The food is great and correctly priced. The menu is based on the typical pub food but with a twist. The chef is clearly making an effort here. There is a large car park at the back. Stopped at the Black Swan for a few well earned beers and quick bite to eat whilst cycling the West Kernow Way and camping nearby. Lovely scenic spot near Helford River at Gweek. Friendly and enjoyable pit stop. I believe the black swan pub has just been taken over. The meal i had was off the specials board, it was tasty but the portion was very small, pork belly is a very cheap cut of pork, a portion of 50mm square is unacceptable don't be so tight. I had 2 puddings to fill up, and even then ended up at the mobile fish and chip van around the corner. Charge more, but put more on the plate. You will never last, it's pub grub not restaurant quality. Went to find a decent roast locally and came across this place. The roast was amazing. This was no ordinary roast. The food was truely amazing. I would not hesitate to recommend this place. The chef is a keeper. The new owners are injecting personality, relaxation and a wonderful atmosphere. Cannot wait to go back. Well done xx My friend and I went for Sunday roast yesterday and food was delicious cooked really nice lots of flavour and good portion size . Annie was looking after us and the service was great ! She was very friendly and attentative will defo be back !
