What a cracking find! This ruined is a fantastic place to explore with care. It's massive, many rooms, windows, doorways to pop in and out of, it's fascinating and beguiling. It's a shortish walk, ten minutes or so from the car over some rough ground and small inclines. It's not a challenging but it's not all smooth. It's totally worth it though because this is a gem of a place. Beautiful views of the coast all around it, it's intriguing to see the parts of the that were original and the parts that were added in the 19th C. It's a wonder that such a beautiful fell into ruin so quickly, it was extensively refurbished in 1836/7 but I guess that within a few years electricity, gas and flushing toilets had left it redundant. So what you're left with is a ruin that's in remarkably good condition and looks like a bit of tlc and a few quid spent on it could bring it back to a livable state! Spectacular scenery when wandering through the ruins. Can spend as much time as you want enjoying the area and castle. Also a photographer's dream. No entry fee and no one there. Well worth a visit. Ask me which was the best place I have seen in all Scotland and I will probably answer "Slains Castle". The here was just pure magic. I don't know why but this was NOT in the list of best castles in Scotland. I don't know if it is the "best" one but I am sure it is a must see. Because of the previous aspect, there are VERY FEW (if any) tourists. You have this magnificent place possibly all for yourself. The are majestic, glorious and... big! It is free! You can reach it by car but also, and this is crazy, by BUS from Aberdeen! The seagulls, the waves, the cliffs, ...everything here helps making it an unbelievable place. My Scotland heart lies here. Went to this castle/fortress, on a quiet Sunday. Was a great day out. Walked here from Bullers of Buchan along the coastal path, scenery was amazing throughout the I did, although I'd personally recommend bringing suitable footwear. As for the inside it's a nice ruin, there are signs which say do not enter. But looked safe enough. Best ruined I've visited in Scotland. And free to roam by yourself using common sense. Kept the kids away from the cliff tops and a close eye on them. Car parking was ample. Wee to reach the grounds. Absolutely the best part of our holiday, for me and the kids! Nice through woodland to spectacular on Scottish coast. are in disrepair and there is a small warning sign but obviously lots of people visit. Plenty of great photo opportunities and there is a little bit of information at the carpark about the ruins. Supposedly the inspiration for Dracula? Definitely worth a if touring the area, pleasant from from car park. (Probably about 1 mile). The is huge, and you can all around and inside. You can your car and approximately 10min on a nice trail to go to the Castle. Car not very big and full of big pot holes. About half a mile to castle. From the through the forest to the windy cliffside, it’s clear why Bram Stoker used this as inspiration for Dracula. Very accessible with a large car park. I totally get that this is a ruin but it needs some attention and has the potential to be as good as other ruined castles around Scotland. The to the is beautiful and there is ample parking but it needs the grass cut, a few plaques put up explaining the history and the graffiti is not acceptable. I have discussed the issues with a current sitting MSP who assures me steps are afoot to make the necessary improvements to make this a welcoming experience for everyone. Great place for the kids. Just be careful at the front along the cliff edge and some of the dark holes are a bit mucky/broken glass etc. I would in Cruden Bay and in from that side as its really nice. The from the other side is a bit bleak. But almost equidistan.
