They have a micro-bewery for beer supplies and they've roped in a former chef from the Crocadon restaurant (1 Michelin star + 1 Michelin green star) to advise on the menu. One of the 'head honchos', Jim Mackenzie, runs the highly environmentally principled (and fully accredited) 'Reco Energy’ based in Kelly Bray nearby - so find out about installing solar, heat pumps, battery storage, EV charging etc while you down his handcrafted beer in a beautifully restored old time pub with a kick-ass in the restaurant! We went here for our wedding anniversary. The pub is set in a beautiful location worthy of the driver alone. Parking can be a challenge but we did have two large cars. And that's our problem. One your inside this gorgeous old pub you can't help but feel relaxed. It has a lovely atmosphere with very friendly staff. Then we come to the food. And I'm pleased to say that it was all very good indeed. I honestly have no complaints whatsoever with this fantastic pub. Very highly recommended 👌 Really cozy local pub. Afternoon visit. Lovely meal here tonight, very reasonably priced. Happened upon steak night unintentionally. Our dog was welcomed with biscuits and I asked for a bowl of water for her which wasn't a problem. Ordered a sausage for the dog, also not an issue. Despite living locally we have given it a wide berth for years due to disappointing food. So glad the new owner is bringing the standards up to speed. We will definitely visit more regularly now. We were staying for a week in the area. The pub is 20 min walk from the cottage we stayed in. It was recommended my the Landlady and it was a first choice in visitors book recommendation. We walked there on Wednesday evening 7ish for some food and drink but was told kitchen not open mid week. We had a drink and was told they are closing at 8pm and we were asked to leave. We did look on Facebook before we went there but there was no information to say that they don’t serve food midweek or closing early that day which would save our time going there. It was quite a lot of effort to get there so we were very disappointed. Been waiting for the food to start, & if last night was anything to go by, it was well worth while. Three of us tried everything on the except a couple of starters & it was uniformly delicious, inventive, full of intriguing tastes & left us well satisfied & content. Puddings were mentioned as coming soon (a stout based one using their own brew was mentioned which sounds a real winter winner!). Can quite believe the chef came from a Michelin environment- it shows! You owe it to yourself to try it. Such a lovely pub! It’s been newly renovated and it’s so cosy and welcoming. We tried the new bar snacks and everything we ate was amazing… the care put into sourcing ingredients and using local suppliers was evident and it’s so nice to have that from a local pub. beer and vibes Such a brilliant new era for The Carps. Local microbrewery Heathen Soul have taken it over recently and done a awesome job renovating. Kept the old charm. Just doing drinks for August, their own brews plus local ales and ciders.Already packed with friendly faces. The live music has been spot on too. Opening weekend had Wasson Shout singing and last weekend the Kit Hillbillies were great. Really nice to see the pub back in the community. Food is set to start in September and I’m already excited for that! The loveliest village pub. Feel very lucky to have the carpenters arms close by. Today we walked there through the woods from Calstock, tried some independent beers, played cards and had a burger off this weekends sample menu. The burger was incredible! I’m so excited for the launch of the full menu. The pub and service are both warm and welcoming. Can’t recommend enough. What an amazing transformation! A true local pub with fabulous people, fabulous beers and fabulous customers 😀 It was absolutely amazing! Me and my partner loved the food and the atmosphere. The landlady was so and easy to talk too. The waiter and waitress (who I assume was on a trial) WERE FANTASTIC! So polite and too. The food was to die for, you should have the steak! It was fast service and pub food, definitely worth the trip to it.
