Lovely place to get some piece and quiet, even though on the Sunday we visited there were quite a few people around. The landscaping is nice and the area is well conserved. Take your time and try identifying some of the various plants and flowers you can see. There is a hide to look out over a small lake, spotted a heron when I was there. Nice place.. Arrived about 9.30am and we were the only ones here. Huge blue skies, bird song, the reeds and grasses moving with the occasional breeze. White egrets and herons flying over. If it wasn't for the sound of the trains, we felt like we could have been in a magical landscape in the middle of nowhere. Lots of wild flowers and butterflies and occasional flashes of brown as little birds darted out of the reeds and across the reens. Within a minute of arriving at the bird hide a kingfisher flew across in front of it. I ended up seeing it 3 times. I've never seen a kingfisher that close before so it made my day. I stayed at the hide for around half an hour. Saw a little grebe with a chick, coots, mallards with young and swans with cygnets. Plus dragonflies and butterflies. Lots of white egrets in the distance sitting in the trees and taking off and landing. A really special place. A lovely, small nature reserve, much of which is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs or buggies as it is level on boardwalks. It was lovely to see the egrets and herons perched in their trees and flying from one tree to another. Lovely natural walks through the levels. Heard the cuckoo call on our arrival, watched warblers through the reeds and marvelled at Egret's nesting in bushes. Green bathing at its best, sweet smelling hay and wildflowers. Varied walks on boards and cut paths. Well worth a visit. A nice quiet walk on a boardwalk to see some birds etc. The portacabin was open, which has toilets inside. Limited car parking spaces, but it was sufficient when I was there on a term time Wednesday at 11.30 am. I thoroughly enjoyed it. A wonderful Wetlands Trust location with unusual mini canals that irrigate the fens; We saw a Cattle Egret, about 10 nesting herons as well as some unusual water fowl; The hide by the lake was in pretty good condition, but on a very cold day proved in need of extra walls and a door; we hope the Trust is generous to support this, this year :-) A beautiful,quiet,reserve teeming with wildlife. Easy to walk around with interesting signage. Very tranquil to spend time in the hide watching the activity on the lake. (Take a chair). NB: No dogs allowed on the reserve, to protect the Wildlife.
