Fab place to eat and drink just off the beaten track outside Dorchester. Food was excellent and the service matched. I had Bouillabaisse, which was homemade and tasty. Large free car park. What a lovely place in a picturesque setting. From the initial welcome we were made to feel right at home. The were brilliant and very helpful. We had the Sunday lunch which was great value and delicious. Top marks for the cauliflower cheese! 👏 Really enjoyed our visit and will be going back. Friendly staff, very about dietary issues. Reasonably priced food. I was impressed that they use gluten free flour for some desserts. All the food was of excellent quality. My only problem was the fruit crumble had far too much sugar in the crumble for my taste. An excellent little pub! The food is delicious, the are all very friendly and helpful, and it’s great that there’s an outside space to sit and that it’s a dog-friendly pub. I’ve eaten at the Saxon Arms a few times now, this time I had the fish pie but the ham, egg and chips is another favourite. This was my first time having a sticky toffee pudding and it was absolutely delicious! 😍 The coeliac in our group was very pleased to see so many gluten free options for her too, it’s not often you see so much choice for those with a gluten free diet. There were plenty of vegetarian options too. Overall, it was a really lovely meal (always is) and we will definitely be back again soon! 👏🏼 A pleasant local pub with friendly staff. The roast lamb was very good, but the fish pie was not the best, a bit runny and lacking in decent fish chunks. £24.50 for a bottle of wine. Stay in Dorset every October and the Saxon Arms is where we head to for our Sunday meal, they do an exquisite veggie nut roast with toasties, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese ,seasonal veg and beautiful gravy. The are very friendly and efficient, locals are very friendly and the atmosphere always very welcoming. veggie options always. Love it here Great food, service and atmosphere. Hard working and always pleasant and polite. One of the nicest inn's I have visited . Firstly they got our name wrong for the reserved table. We had to ask for drinks and menus. Menus should already be on a reserved table. Portion sizes incredibly small for what you are paying. Cauliflower cheese was flavourless. Not great. The brachitta consisted of squashy tomatoes on bread at £17.50. Not worth it for the value. We have been before and it was amazing food. Just unfortunate not this time. 4 of us had a meal and a few drinks at this pub, the meals was ok at best I had sea bass which was only 2 smallish bits about 3” x 2“and hardly anything else, a few sliced spuds and a bit of green . I had a pudding because the meal was so poor and I had a cheese board which was £10.95 and even that was small. I have a loads of cheeses boards in my life, which have had much more food for less money. Theirs were 3 bits of small cheese, 8 crackers & red grapes and some very old celery which was brown on one end, we complained and they replaced it with 2 even small bits. Also, how can you have 2 different prices for a large wine one was 8.99 and 11.50 all of us rated the meal around 5 out of 10 very poor. WE WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN. We’ve been coming to the Saxon Arms for years, and with reason: the pub is lovely, the welcoming service from all the is exemplary and the food is a cut above the average. I don’t normally write reviews, especially for places I visit frequently, however I ordered the Beef Wellington for lunch today from their varied specials board and it was simply superb. It’s a favourite dish, but I rarely have it when I’m out as it’s easy to mess up - tiny steaks that are overcooked and pastry that’s soggy and tasteless, and the whole lot is more often than not outrageously overpriced, but today’s was outstanding. It was beautifully presented, perfectly cooked and tasted fabulous. The last Beef Wellington I had that was this was at Hawksmoor in Spitalfields, a world away from this relaxed, quiet country pub in the middle of Dorset. I can honestly say that the Saxon Arms never fails to meet expectations and would always get my hearty recommendation, but today’s lunch was worthy of an establishment charging many times more for its food. Prices are about average for pubs in the area but food and service are a cut above, so overall it’s very value. I chose the liver and bacon and my wife a curry, both were excellent and I rarely say that about a pub curry. I had a taste and it was as as any Indian restaurant. The portions are not huge but certainly enough, after all you must leave room for one of the delicious desserts. We both had the cheesecake with pistachio ice-cream, yum yum!
