I stayed for two nights B&B with my son. We did 3 half day rides and had a really lovely time! Wonderful, reliable and sure footed horses, stunning views and beautiful mountains. We saw sheep, wild and a small waterfall. Great team at the Grange all around who made us feel so welcome. They even picked us up from the train station and drove us to Hay on Wye (a cute little town with lots of bookstores). Thank you to the Grange team, and in particular Jessica & Rebecca! Just spent two gorgeous mornings out with Lauren celebrating my mum's 60th. From the moment of booking the Grange were so kind and accommodating, answering all my questions. Our rides were picked according to our abilities which was just perfect. We all felt so comfortable we had them same the next day. Lauren was incredibly knowledgeable of the area. We felt so safe and at ease along the where she gave clear instructions whilst keeping a fun, happy and calm environment. We would definitely recommend and come again! Thank you so much! We left the yard an hour late for our hack. But gave us to groom and get to know our horses. Unfortunately we didn’t get any photos taken of us which I thought should be included in the price £70 per person. I don’t think it is worth £70 per person with leaving an hour late and no photos. We could have hacked a lot further if our leader actually walked faster. I was up the bum in front of me the whole which was a shame. I had a fantastic solo 3 day stay at the BnB with 3 full day trek rides (planned 2.5 and expanded to the full day as I enjoyed so much). Riding was a blast - Jessica and the team really took careful consideration for each persons horse. I rode Spangle and Cheyenne. Was very impressed with their surefootedness, staminia, and training, and found the saddles comfortable. Absolutely beautiful views. I'm a novice adult rider (returned to riding this past year after many years off), and don't get the chance to trek often, and still get a little nervous cantering on a new horse. This was such a fun and confidence building adventure! The first day (weekday) I rode with only one other guest and Lauren as our guide, with the opportunity for lots of short canters and a few longer - Spangle gave me great confidence and took care of me. The next two days we did separate AM and PM half sessions (Fri & Sat), returning to the Grange for lunch, due to more riders with some only doing half day, and iffy weather and wet grounds. This was also fun to have a combination of riding, and see different technical routes even at a slower pace. Be prepared to dismount at least once, and guide your due to steep and/or slippery conditions - the guides are great at finding spots to easily remount even if you need a step. The trek groups can sometimes get quite large in number, but advanced riders can hold back their for a trot or canter as the terrain allows (however note the do get quite frisky being held from the group). Obviously, trots and canters are also controlled by ground conditions, including how rocky, steep, and wet/slippery or boggy the ground is - the guides know the exact spots that are suiting when able, and clearly communicated. Be aware with larger groups it can be a bit hard to hear the guides especially when windy - it was helpful for riders to relay the message along. If you're a first or beginner rider, don't be shy on asking others for help or advice, or ask if you didn't hear. The will often stop to drink at streams (or grab a few bites of grass as others drink). The BnB is homey and dated but comfortable. Read reviews to set expectations; it may not be for everyone but I was comfortable. Rear entrance for guests, half of the is for private use (reception in front room). I enjoyed that they had a sitting room and outdoor patio for guest use (note deck could be slippery). Clean comfortable rooms and beds, shower pressure was a little weak but adequate. Some people may find the older a tad chilly - bring layers, I loved being able to enjoy the thick duvet and was very cozy. Very nice and quiet, with some amazing star gazing if the weather cooperates. Note multiple cats free roam - a few very friendly and few very shy- and a friendly dog lives on site though usually in the private - but not for anyone with allergies. Also note bedrooms doors don't lock if you are carrying valuables or uncomfortable with this. Kettle with tea/coffee in room. Breakfast was fantastic with full cooked offerings along with cereal, yogurt, and fruit. Lunches were simple but acceptable (choice of sandwich, crisps, water- taken out for full day in saddlebags if weather allowed, or served back at the BnB) and welcome to bring your own. I did have limited cell reception in some areas of the property, and they do offer free wifi (website was unclear if they had). The public bathrooms outside for riders or campers were decently kept. I traveled via Abergavenny and requested a pickup, which was easy at a reasonable rate. They only take bookings over phone for both BnB and riding - while I fully understand this, I would've appreciated some written or emailed confirmation once booked. Otherwise had a fantastic stay and riding! Another fantastic day for me on Muffin and Stephanie on Moomim. Escorted by the lovely Sarah with a really friendly bunch of experienced riders matched brilliantly to each by Jess the owner. Lots of canters on these beautiful surefooted and ponies and lots of bumbling along as well to take in the fantastic views and atmosphere. Getting off at one point that was far too steep and craggy to the down they helped steady us, even Moonin who didn't like her feet getting wet! Everything was done by taking our no one rushing us or the horses. We stayed over B & B in the farmhouse which was a from and no TV or phone signal just helped us relax more. Yummy breakfast served by Ruth with a smile and nothing was too much trouble. This place is a gem. Well worth the trip for a relaxing fun away from the stresses of life. We were made so welcome from the getgo we didn't want to come home. We'll be back again very soon thank you x Lovely experience riding in the black mountains. Stayed the night before in the shepherd hut and breakfast at the main house which was excellent and had packed lunch as did the full day ride. Really enjoyed and thanks to everyone there and of course the gorgeous for taking us out on the trails! Place to go to get away from it all and relax. Excellent guide on our and would recommend. You can choose from a few different accommodation options and for how long you fancy being out for. No phone signal but there is a red phone box so like the old days you can ring using that but you need coins on you! A superb experience… a two hour trek booked, and an hour in beautiful sunshine was followed by an hour in torrential sideways rain and high winds… it was brilliant! The scenery incredible, staff amazing, supportive and encouraging … our 11 year old son came away with magical memories. Thank you so much! I booked the Grange on a solo spontaneous bank holiday and was warmly welcomed by the lovely staff and wonderful horses. Got quite attached to ‘Sandstone’. The grange takes great care of you’re experience and of you. Lovely to see a place that’s doing what they do genuinely and from the heart. It’s a bit like visiting the family. Thank you.
