This was our ending pick up location for the Alpe Adria trail and we were absolutely pumped when we heard several days earlier that it was back open for business. After a grinding 6 hour hike, arriving seemed like a dream. As we walked onto the property we felt a very cool vibe. The facility really cares about our environment and it shows. They have EV and bike chargers, and even cook with a sun oven. Even though we had hiked miles in Slovenia and crossed into Italy by only a few hundred yards, the place felt very Italian. Most guests spoke Italian as well as the staff and everyone looked like models. At first, being American, we were intimidated. However staff put us at ease with a smile, a “how’s it going”, and really good Apple strudel. Highly recommend this location for eats, drinks, or a place to stay. Much much more than a “mountain hut”. Ottimo, pochi piatti ma buoni, io preferisco così visto che non è un ristorante ma un rifugio anche se si accede in auto, ottima punto di partenza per delle escursioni. Opening hours not clear - unfortunately we missed them... Plus side: charging point for ebikes. Wonderful place - very special and full of history at the border of Slovenia and Italy. World war I started near here, and after WWII there were Slovenians who tried to cross the border from communist Yugoslavia who were chased and shot at by Tito's army and guards at this border. So much history for such a small place - there are many little villages on the mountain road through the forest which leads here from Cividale and most only have a few houses. The food is authentic and home made and delicious - the people who work here are nice and caring and very friendly. We didn't spend the night, but we have eaten here several times over the years, and it is always a pleasure. Beautiful views over the valley from the refuge - inside and outside seating in summer. I recomend pasta with funghi Fantastic food... Super friendly service... Love it This Rifugio is closed, apparently for a while. I had this confirmed 6th July 2025 Sept 16, 2025: they are open, friendly and nice. We arrived on our bikes in the pouring rain and the espresso with sambuca hits the spot! Ottimo rifugio situato in un posto stupendo vicino alle trincee della grande guerra dove ha combattuto anche il Gen. Erwin ROMMEL, il rifugio offre delle camere e un ottimo cibo a dei prezzi onesti... Relax,buon cibo,bellissimo posto adatto hai bambini Very good dinner and nice people I gestori sono delle persone meravigliose. Abbiamo passato una piacevolissima serata.
