Lovely pub, nice staff and atmosphere. I ordered fish and chips to take out, but it was full of bones, and inedible. I attempted 3 bites, but it was a chocking hazard, I had to throw it out sadly, very expensive mistake. Centrally placed, but then Porlock is small, most of it is centrally placed, but the Castle, more so. Set in High St, if you're walking through Porlock, you'll walk past the Castle. Good bar, good selection of drinks/beers, and decent food, cooked, nice pub food. The welcome was nice, staff were friendly, I didn't stay here do can't comment on the rooms. Obviously a few locals in every night, which is always a good sign. We love the Castle pub and are in most days when holidaying in Porlock. The staff are always warm and friendly, whether you are there for a quick pint or stopping for lunch. We would always recommend the Pepperoni pizza - tasty meat toppings on a bed of best quality cheese. Perfect welcoming place to go to. We phoned to book in because we have a rescue anxious dachshound who literally barks at every dog which can be difficult when wanting to eat out. The very kind gentleman on the phone said he would place us in the restaurant area because it's was quieter there for us. When we got here just after 6pm we realised they had shut a part of the restaurant area off for us so we could peacefully eat dinner together with no issues. The food was lovely and the puddings were also very tasty and the portions were generous too. Definitely would recommend to anyone who needed that extra support with a nervous pup and looking for good food. I was looking forward to trying some English Ale however the glass of Tribute that I was served was very cloudy and flat. It did not taste very nice. I took this back to the bar but the lady said it was okay. I could not drink it, so left it on the bar. Shortly afterwards a scruffy looking bald headed man came into the bar and started pumping from the section from where my drink was served. My English friend said that I must have been served the "end of the barrel" as a new one was being pulled through. Why would I have been served something undrinkable? Just got home from an amazing long weekend at The castle. The whole team were welcoming and friendly, couldn’t do enough for us. Our room was very spacious, perfect with the dogs! We ate at the pub every evening and enjoyed the fresh home made meals - especially the pie! We will be back, and highly recommend the Castle for anyone wanting to stay in Porlock! Very poor and unprofessional bar service. Visited on the afternoon of Monday 25 August with family. Although the bar area was not busy we witnessed several customers come into the bar and was waiting patiently at the far end to be served. The lady serving (🙄) did not even greet or make eye contact with them and after what seemed 10 minutes they left. Our service was mediocre. As someone who runs a Pub myself, I wonder if this member of staff has received any training at all? For a business to lose several customers within a short amount of time, it does beg the question as to how this Pub survives? We will not return.
