The walk is pretty steep, but if you are a backpacker that came on foot from Lavelanet, then this additional part should feel like a reasonably-paced epilogue (unless you have run out of water on your way to the castle). There's little information available in English on the signs, so if you came here to read about the Cathars, be prepared to polish your French. As is often the case with high-altitude places, the view alone is the struggle. I must say the place doesn't feel particularly mystical, excluding the atmosphere of remoteness that its relative altitude creates. Guess that has to do with it having a more boring after 1244 Small Ruin of a cathartic castle, historical wise very interesting. About the ruin is not that much to see, what amaze me is that there were living up to 600 people on the rock. The view over the surrounding land is amazing, the way up is a bit challenging for a couch potato but do able. Take water and sturdy shoes with you. Very steep hike but just views at the top. Plus your ticket gets you entry into the archeological museum in the village which was it (especially the 2nd floor). Bring water and hope for clouds but it was special at the top. There were other small trails around the castle at the top as well so be sure to explore a bit. Beautiful scenery, always wanted to the sight of the last stand of the Cathars & all the of the site...the views from the chateau are absolutely and well the small hike steep enough there is steps an pathways all the way to the chateau I would absolutely recommend it for a Beautiful place. Although we visited when it was misty, the hike up to the castle itself was definitely it. And, to our surprise, the ticket also included the museum downstairs into the small village. Definitely recommended to the place. We enjoyed it a lot and it's very nice to learn all there is about the Cathar and the castle. place to remember our brave Cátaros. The atmosphere is incredible...so pure and magical. The views and stunning location make the to the summit worthwhile. Add in the sense of as a monument to a terrible religious massacre, and this really is a special place. The small museum down in the village is also well a too. it of visiting, very kind reception and interesting(cruel and scary also) of cathares. Unfortunately not a great sunny day one can see far far away, expecting next time I went to Château de Montségur on the 7-04-2024. It was a experience. The was not as bad as I thought it looked. It has steps in places, some quite high and quite rocky and uneven, so just take your time if you have concerns. I went with someone who had a hip replacement 8 weeks ago, and they managed the too( she was a little sore but not too bad). One of our party mentioned he wished he had better trainers as his feet hurt coming down with the pressure of the stones on the souls of his feet. Either walking shoes or descent cushioned trainers will be fine. It took me around 25 minutes and I stopped at a couple of view points for photos and just to take in the beautiful landscape. There was no charge to go up as out of season I believe. Car park is free, and it looks fairly new restaurant opposite the car park, however this wasn't open as again out of season. The is well it, take a pack lunch and water and enjoy the energies and view. (NOTE, no where to fill up water bottles on the or at the bottom) You might as well make the most of the LOL and make a couple of hours of it. On our we up again at night fall to experience the energies and take night pictures in the dark. (Take good torches and quite rocky navigating the descent in pitch dark .Again a experience as we had the Château to ourselves. Well the trip and I will again in the future Very evocative ruin.
