The Eduards Smilgis Theater Museum (Eduarda Smilga Teatra Muzejs) occupies the house of the distinguished director, the founder of the "Dailes (Art) Theater", Eduards Smilgis (1886-1966), in Pardaugava part of Riga. The building was especially designed for Smilgis in the 1920s and reflects his original, striking and contradictory personality. The museum was opened in 1976. The most interesting rooms are the small hall with a stage and Smilgis' study. The exhibition traces the development of professional theater in Latvia. We really enjoyed this museum and learning more about Latvian theater. The museum staffperson was very kind and helpful. While the exhibition was not in English, but we did fine using Google translate on our phones. It's a shame I hadn't been there before. Definitely worth visiting either there is a special event or not. Exposition modern and exciting. Interesting expositions, great place for events! Beautiful grounds and mansion, excellent layout, and terrific displays of Latvian theatre history. Just note that most of the exhibits are in Latvian, but the staff is very friendly and pleasant. The new puppet exhibit is great. No museum only. Place for theatrical events and performances. Actors, students and other creative persons welcome.
