Had a very great meal with generous sized portions. I had the mixed grill, my wife had the chicken burger. Waitress very present and described the meals soup of the day and today's special very well. Booked a table and met up with some friends for dinner in what was a pleasant upstairs dining environment. The restaurant was quiet and plenty staff in attendance. We were offered drinks on seating, which arrived promptly. The draught Guinness was a good pint. Like most of our party, I had Haddock and chips for main. Haddock was fresh and cooked pretty much to perfection, though the batter was a bit on the soft side. Chips and peas, though presented separately were standard fare. Vegetarian options are pretty limited as one of our party discovered. Sweets didn't live up to the main course as they lacked flavour. There are several first class local ice creams, but the pink one accompanying my lemon meringue pie was not one of them. The price for the meal was considered very reasonable by all. The rating of four stars is largely due to the quality of the Haddock, it's cooking, the general ambience, the cost and the service. This could become 5 stars by addressing the vegetarian options and the sweet menu. Lovely place I stumbled upon by chance whilst cycling through Aberdeen. Great coffee and food is decent. No complaints! Mostly, the dishes are fried but not in a good way. We had the prawns (likely they were frozen), haddock and chips (wasn't enjoyable), chilli veg, and rice (sweet and sour sauce was from a bottle). Overall not great. Used to be great but sad to say it’s all gone a bit wrong, maybe chefs spending too much time selling poor standard (but expensive!!) meals & bakes to shops & garages? Don’t get me wrong it’s not horrid, it’s just pricey for something you’d get at any microwave friendly food chain. Staff better this time, quite rude last time we were there as they “close in an hour and a half”. Had takeaway here too during lockdown and disappointing wasn’t even close, overcooked dry chicken & worse chips than the frozen chips I make in the oven at home!! Cold restaurant, food the starters were good but mains a disaster I order breaded haddock was awful fish was brown in colour Husband ordered chicken burger it was so tough he couldn’t chew it. Was still hungry so ordered sticky toffee pudding well that was disgusting it was a dark brown and very dense and tough Icecream was fine Will not be going back we had 2 soft drinks Total cost £54 an absolute disgrace And had to wait ages for service and very few people in restaurant I was frozen waiting Couldn’t get home quick enough for a heat There was 8 of us but only 7 starters turned up. Frozen butter for the bread with the soup. Waited over an hour for our main courses which were mediocre at best. Chips had to be returned to actually be cooked Good food and pleasant staff. Only downside was there was practically no lights on and the heating wasn't on so it was pretty chilly. Just the cost of living crisis raising it's hand, such a shame for all these small pubs and restaurants. Would recommend the food though, just hope all these lovely places survive the crisis as it would be a real shame if they didn't.
