We visited with friends for an evening meal. I had the risotto and my husband had the lamb shank. Both were delicious. Although it was a Monday evening they were busy and there was a good atmosphere. Service was prompt and polite. My only disappointment was that they didn't do floater coffees but sadly that is the case in many pubs these days. The young waiters and bar staff don't even know what they are 😅 People who know my reviews will know that clean scores well, this is really a 1* just scrapping into 2* as the food is adequate for the money - just. The outside has been refreshed with planters, new flower baskets and paint, do not be fooled the inside was due for gutting 15 years ago. Chair upholstery stained and worn, wall materials falling off, cutlery worn and damaged, glasses scratched and dishwasher damaged, furniture generally poor and overall cleanliness poor (look at the window vent!). We booked a table with good lighting as one of our group visually impaired, we got a table away from a window in the dark, the first glass had lipstick and scratches. The food service was prompt and food hot, the price was cost effective if taken in isolation from the surroundings but nothing will make us return due to all the other failings. The risotto was very undercooked and the prawns didn’t seem to be “king prawn” as it stated on the menu. The pie was good but the chips were soggy and mushy. Very disappointing experience. The food and service didn’t worth the price. My friend said it was the worst pub meal he'd ever had. They got his starter wrong, still put bacon and cheese on his burger despite him asking for it to be left off and his chips were cold. My Sunday roast tasted as if it had just come out of the freezer - I'd get a better-tasting meal with a ready meal from Lidl. My worst ever pub Sunday roast. Pub looks lovely from the outside. Shame about the food. I should have read the other reviews first. Just come home from a fantastic Christmas lunch. John and all the staff were very welcoming and friendly and made sure our Christmas day was special. Lovely little touches such as crackers and a selection box. It's the first time we've eaten out on Christmas day and it won't be the last. Even our dog enjoyed herself! See you again soon! Nice warm and welcoming place. Staff were lovely and helpful. We had the lamb shank and it was beautiful. Lovely and hot and nothing over cooked. The building was warm aswell. Very comfortable outing. The only thing that I would say as a bit of negative is it took a while to be served once sat down, and it wasnt overly busy but apart from that food came out in good time and as said, service was pleasant and with a smile. Lovely young lady served us! Great food and value. Deffo recommend the katsu curry or the hunters chicken. Only sad thing was the gammon was a little dry! Lovely place and will deffo be back! Had a great meal at the Swan inn Tockington. The food was perfect and came quick. Maddie gave excellent service and was very attentive. Would 100% return to this pub in the future.
