To stand here where so many perished was quite emotional. To see portions of the battlements, a bunker and sections of the floating pier was so amazing. I just visited alone, like should be, just to feel the places... Sitting alone in a machine gun nest, I was able to realize to a better extent, what the people endured at the landings. My Father, BM1 Emil Balogh, skippered a landing craft from the USS Charles Carroll and landed troops of the 29th Infantry Division here on Dday. He made the initial assault landing and several more that fateful day. He never got a scratch, sadly the same cannot be said for many of the troops he landed there under very heavy fire. My family visited there and my kids and I walked out to the water at low tide. I experienced shock and goosebumps when I saw how far we were from the bluffs….. I can’t imagine seeing that through soldiers eyes.
