New found woodlands with a sad tinge of neglect. Things happened here in the 2000' but now left to be absorbed back to nature. Nice pond area probably built for interested school children now corded off due to safety. Boating lake full of silt and fallen tree branches and oversized dog sticks. Visitors centre showing on the signed post"open" but door locked and deserted. Looks like the friends of Sunnyhurst have moved on. Shame Conveniently located near Darwen Town Centre, Sunnyhurst is justifiably a beautiful place to visit for a meander through nature, or just a to contemplate life. Unlike most urban woods, Sunnyhurst seems to be very well maintained, with minimal rubbish, and it is home to a surprisingly large number of animal & plant species (Kingfishers can be found here if you're patient !) Although it doesn't look big on a map, the are actually much larger than I thought, & to make a complete circuit of the could take at least 1.5 Hours ! The also have a Visitor Centre & Cafe - which seem to be nice places to visit - and definitely make the a more attractive as a half day out - but unfortunately they were closed on the September Sunday afternoon I visited - with no sign I could find explaining why. Hopefully this will change the next time I visit. Amazing public access woods, footpaths, streams, lake area, band stand, historical visitors centre. Cared for mainly by volunteers, some council investment. Minutes from the town centre by car, but a different world, with good access and from there, great walks onto the West Pennine Moors and Darwen Tower. Lovely woodland walk, you can access Sunnyhurst Res which then leads up to Darwen Tower. The Kiosk is available for weddings, there's also a small house that hosts frequent craft & art exhibitions Bit of a shame that the Himalayan Balsam has been allowed to run riot though. We love Sunnyhurst Woods. It's only 2 minutes from our house. Had a lovely picknick with all the children. A great area of forest, streams, pools and various flora. Dogs are welcome, and people mostly keep them under control. You in, and immediately, the noise of the outside world fades. All you hear is the wind through the trees, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the steady beat of your own pulse. This is a place where you can clear your mind and focus. No distractions. Just you and the mission—whatever that might be. The trails? They aren’t for the faint of heart. Sure, there are easy paths, but if you want to test yourself, there’s terrain that will push you. Mud, rocks, uneven ground—bring your boots and your grit. Every step reminds you that life isn't meant to be comfortable. It's meant to challenge you, make you stronger, and teach you resilience. The history here is real. You can feel it in the old stones, the ancient trees. This isn’t just some park. It’s a place where the past meets the present, where you can the same as those who came before. You can almost hear the echoes of the old ways, and that’s something worth respecting. Sunnyhurst Wood is also about solitude and self-discipline. It’s not about getting lost, but about finding yourself. You these alone or with a trusted companion, and you leave distractions behind. You get clarity. You get focused. You get better. You can bring your family, too. Teach your kids what it means to embrace the outdoors. Let them run, and let them explore. Let them scrape their knees and get dirt under their nails. That’s how they learn. That’s how they grow. This isn’t a place for excuses. The weather doesn’t matter. The mud doesn’t matter. The difficulty doesn’t matter. What matters is how you show up. What matters is that you go out, put one foot in front of the other, and get it done. That’s what Sunnyhurst Wood is. A proving ground. So, if you’re looking for a place to unwind, a place to push yourself, or a place to simply appreciate the strength and beauty of nature, Sunnyhurst Wood delivers. No frills. No nonsense. Just results. Such a lovely little walk, alot of stairs to get down from the road but all flat once your down there.. some look tricky and probs best when it hasnt rained Excellent place for exercise or dog walking etc. Lots of bins for dog waste (so no excuses!!). Only knocked a star of as some are dangerous in places with big drops. It's the result of previous landslides that have been pinned back up. Just beware if you take small children up on the higher paths.... This is lovely area to with the family. Is also ideal for your dog. Never too busy and most of the other dog owners are responsible. Beautiful place for a walk Loved the stream and nature view. Highly recommend. Nice woodland walk. We did the circular route from visitors centre up to reservoir, then past the begining of Darwen Moors back down Sunnyhurst Lane. Was achievable for 6 and 3 year old. Tired them out nicely 😄 Next time will park near Moors entrance and head up to Darwen Tower, which was just visible through the clouds. New area for me and upto the tower is nice to do Lovely through the woods, lots of and lovely at this time of year with the beautiful colours.
