Nice looking pub, very cosy and friendly. The bar staff were lovely, the lady in the restaurant less so - she basically ignored us (not even a “hello, I’ll be with you in a minute”) for at least 10 minutes after we’d sat down, no offer of a menu, just walked past us several times with zero acknowledgment - very odd. Food was which made up for it a bit. Our room was nice, good view, comfy bed, but - and this was an issue - the bathroom had a saniflo type system that meant every time you flushed the toilet or even ran the taps too long (or showered) you were treated to an ear splitting noise - much like rocks being ground in the teeth of hell, and when those in adjacent rooms did their thing, we got a slightly muted version of the same. This did spoil things as, for example, I felt compelled to shower as quickly as possible (especially as we were up early) to avoid disturbing other guest, but also - the noise was LOUD, really unpleasant, sometimes unpredictable and made me jump every time. Not good. Despite all of that, it was a handy stop for us and, in a different room with no weird bathroom noises, I’d definitely stay again. Quirky old building with updated guest rooms. The staff is super friendly & helpful, and locals frequent the bar. They offer made to order hot breakfasts with eggs & terrific bacon, or fruit & cereal. We loved the location for visiting Lowther Castle or Penrith. A short distance from two other pubs with great food. We loved our 2 night stay. We booked this place for three nights and last Friday on our way up, I got a courtesy call from Louise who works there, to say they could not offer any food that evening as they had had problems with their gas supply. I thought this was very courteous to let us know. When we arrived last Friday for a three night stay, one of the new owners, Darren, politely told us that they had only just taken the place over a few days ago. However, our room was very comfortable and it looked like it had been very recently updated. It was and warm, clean, had a great shower,, comfortable bed, and really nice upmarket tea, coffee, and hot chocolate products. The breakfast was great and it is in a quiet location with plenty of parking. Darren and Susie both have a great sense of humour and the pub seemed to get plenty of customers in, including locals. I would wholeheartedly recommend this place to stay and we shall certainly be back. We had a fantastic two night stay here and have to say it was just lovely. Rooms are a little small but it wasn't an issue for us at all and they were very clean with a lovely, comfortable bed. The pub (300 year old) is very comfortable and quite, quite authentic. The food is just gorgeous. I had the pulled pork pasta both nights as it was incredibly tasty and very delicious. My husband and the steak pie and chicken pie over the two nights and said they were a 10 👌. The staff are all lovely, nothing was too much trouble - Mandy in particular was so kind, thoughtful and helpful. The two young ladies serving meals never stopped for 5 minutes and the chefs must be mentioned for obviously working their trade so hard to provide us with such fayre! Thank you all - we will definitely be back. Oh - one tiny observation and it's not a complaint - it would be to have a mirror at the table on the wall to get ready by (I didn't bring one so had to use the reflective glass of my kindle) and a bathroom shelf to put toothbrushes/ other items on. Stayed here on our way to the Highlands very welcoming and hearty breakfast &evening meal. Our dog was very welcome,even a sausage in a special plate at breakfast. Although a lot of steps inside, easy walking close by for mornings &evening trips out with our dog. We love this pub and have used it as an overnight stop for a number of years now as travel on holiday to Scotland from the south West of England. Traditional and unspoilt by modern trendy pub bling it is a welcome sight after a long drive. The staff are always friendly and helpful, the food wholesome and the atmosphere in an evening warm and inviting with travellers and locals alike. Reasonable rates and dog friendly rooms make it a must for us.
