Popped in for dinner with my partner and our anxious dog — staff were lovely and found us a quiet, tucked-away table, which was perfect. Starters were excellent: the prawns and cheese soufflé were spot on. Sadly, the mains didn’t keep up. My partner’s cod came with veg that were burnt on the outside but still undercooked, and my steak, ordered medium, arrived almost well done. The chunky chips that came with it looked great but were undercooked in the middle — a bit disappointing. Sticky toffee pudding finished things on a high note, but for the £130 total, the overall quality just wasn’t there. With nearby places like the Punchbowl Inn offering much better cooking for much better prices, this one falls below expectations despite the friendly service. It was a very quiet Monday lunchtime, was friendly and efficient and I really appreciated being able to arrange a candle in a pud for my Father's birthday! Soufflé was delicious as always and the ploughman's is extraordinarily good value. First of all, I would like to thank you Gertrudes for recommending this wonderful place. Top noch and an excellent environment. Stephen at the bar accommodated my request of Expresso Martini which I enjoyed tremendously. I feel the Geroge and Dragon is where you go to have an experience which is exactly what I had and extremely pleasant experience. I am definitely going back again very soon. What a great cozy place to stay for a night or two! Our room was small but quite cozy and clean! The staff is very friendly and helpful but the best part is their restaurant with a delicious menu! You can’t definitely miss their cheese and spinach soufflé, pears salad and the toffee pudding! Only came for the food but it was absolutely gorgeous. The shepherds pie was delicious and they can cook a good steak too. Fast and friendly and lovely atmosphere and decor! My partner and I were recommended this when staying for two days in Clifton as part of our debut visit to the Lake District. Upon arrival we were informed that the was short-staffed and that food may not be available, which immediately left us feeling anxious about going engaging further with the venue. The attending employee later confirmed that that chef was willing to cook our meal; and so, we were eventually seated in the dining area, until deciding to move to a nearby snug for more privacy and peace of mind. Due to our move (and despite giving notice to the attending employees) we were subsequently left without cutlery or water until getting the attention of an employee; after which, we were attended to as required. When the food arrived it did not look worthy of the prices asked for (£22.00 for a mushroom risotto at the time of this review) and while the meal was satisfactory when eaten, both my partner and I felt that we had paid more than the food was worth (no value for money). Having finished our meal, we requested to pay our bill and the attending employee rang up the costs and placed a receipt upon the counter immediately before offering a card reader for our payment. Having looked at the receipt "after" we returned home from the venue, we discovered that we had been charged a discretionary 10% fee of £6.80 without being told about this beforehand and despite the sub-par service. As a cautionary tale, I would ask that future diners throughly check their receipts and raise any issues with their before paying the venue, and while the choice remains with me to obtain a charge refund, I have prudently opted to write this review as a way of helping to prevent any further issues like this in the future. To anybody reading this review I would kindly ask that you "always dine with awareness" and "fully read the menu" as I certainly will from this point on. NOTE If the wishes to refund the charge I am happy to amend my review in kind. What a find this was! Stopped off for the night on the long journey south from Scotland. Super welcoming , comfortable and beautifully decorated in the room, the pub and the restaurant . One of the best meals we had in our entire fortnight away. Sublime food and well priced for the quality . We were served by Stephanie who was very efficient, friendly and also a good laugh throughout ! Thanks George and Dragon (and Stephanie ) for ensuring our holiday ended on a high Website change monitoring Monitor any webpage for changes – get instant email alerts when prices drop, new jobs are posted, products come back in stock, or competitors update their sites.
