Excellent, well managed attraction. This is a special place. It’s amazing how these stones have survived thousand of years. There are actually two circles here, with the second being a cremation circle. Good signs, although a little faded, explain the mystical sight. We went at dusk and appreciate the stones, and the scenery for almost an hour. Very cool. Great place but I wish I'd known there was a Scout Camp ongoing the day we visited. I felt slightly awkward walking through a group of young boys with a camera and having the Scout leaders staring at me! The information boards tell the story of the Recumbent and I was very interested to read about the cremation cemetary too. I had no idea that was there. A truly fascinating spot. You could spend a while here, very peaceful when the scouts went in for lunch! Just beyond a small carpark down an out of the way road is a of recumbent stones from the Neolithic period. We were the only ones there, which made it all the more magical. The site has multiple historic markers detailing what we know about the circle, but the most interesting thing might be that the answer is “not much”. Why did people build these, what were they for, how did they do it? You may puzzle through these questions as you wander the site, while wondering what people +4000 years from now might see in your footprint. Simple but effective. We visited Scotland last May for 10 days and this is the site that we remember the most fondly. Read the other reviews for directions, the car navigation system won’t get you there. There’s a large carved sign to let you know you have arrived. The small dirt parking lot is shared with a scout camp. It’s a short easy walk to the which sits in the mowed grass atop the hill. There’s interpretive signage but no services, no fee to park or enter. You can walk amid the that is upwards of 5000 years old. We had it all to ourselves! Aberdeenshire has many circles but this one is the best—it’s still in its original location, it’s easy to find, and it’s very robust it’s not just one standing stones. Really stunning circle. Access is very easy with a small car park next to the Scout centre. Some nice explanations and the views around the are fantastic. Highly recommend if you are in the area. Good parking. A beautiful, 4,000-year-old Neolithic circle. Unfortunately, a family was walking all over the stones with no care of any damage they may cause, showing a complete lack of respect for our isles history and the site itself.
